Prayer to Christ.

Phil. ii, 6-11.

1 LORD of mercy and of might!
Of mankind the Life and Light!
Maker, Teacher infinite!

Jesus, hear and save!

2 Who, when sin's tremendous doom
Gave creation to the tomb,

Didst not scorn the Virgin's womb;
Jesus, hear and save!

3 Mighty Monarch! Saviour mild!
Humbled to a mortal child,
Captive, beaten, bound, revil'd;
Jesus, hear and save!

4 Thron'd above celestial things,
Borne aloft on angels' wings,
Lord of lords, and King of kings!
Jesus, hear and save!

5 Who shall yet return from high,
Robed in might and majesty,
Hear us, help us, when we cry!
Jesus, hear and save!

in Lent.

The young warned and directed.

Matt. vii, 13, 14. Acts xiv, 22. Heb. xi, 25, 26.

[ocr errors]

1 THERE is a course, whose paths are smooth, Whose waters calmly flow;

Where earth-born spells the senses soothe,
And earth-born flow'rets blow.

2 Young soul! of that smooth course beware! Destruction lurks beneath:

Like Eden's fruit the form is fair,
But ah! the end is death.

3 There is a way of strife and toil,
With thickets tangled o'er;
Where waves of trial foam and boil,
And winds of mourning roar.

4 Shun not, young soul! this troubled wayThe way thy Saviour trod—

Pursue his steps thro' life's brief day,
And rest at eve with God.

Jehovah a covenant God.

P. M.

Heb. vi, 17-20.

THE God of Abra'am praise,
Who reigns enthron'd above;
Ancient of everlasting days,
And God of love:
Jehovah, great I AM,

By earth and heav'n confess'd!
I bow and bless the sacred Name
For ever blest.

2 [The God of Abraʼam praise,
At whose supreme command,
From earth I rise, and seek the joys
At his right hand:

3

I all on earth forsake,

Its wisdom, fame, and power;
And Him my only portion make,
My shield, and tower.]

The God of Abra'am praise,
Whose all-sufficient grace
Shall guide me all my pilgrim days,

In all my ways:

He calls a worm his friend;
He calls Himself my God;

And He shall save me to the end
Through Jesu's blood.

in Lent.

4 [Though nature's strength decay,
And earth and hell withstand;
To Canaan's bounds I urge my way
At his command:
The goodly land I see,

5

With peace and plenty blest;
A land of sacred liberty,
And endless rest.]

He by Himself hath sworn;
I on his oath depend;

I shall, on eagles' wings upborne,
To heav'n ascend;

I shall behold his face;

I shall his power adore;
And sing the wonders of his grace
For evermore.

Ps. xxv, 7; cvi, 4, 5.

Good Lord remember me.

C. M.

Luke xxiii, 42, 43.

10 THOU, from whom all goodness flows, I lift my soul to Thee;

In all my sorrows, conflicts, woes,

Good Lord, remember me!

2 When on my aching, burden'd heart
My sins lie heavily;

Thy pardon speak, thy grace impart:
In love remember me!

in Lent.

3 When sore temptations cross my way,
And ills I cannot flee;

Oh! let my strength be as my day:
For good remember me!

4[If on my face, for thy dear name,
Shame and reproaches be;
Welcome reproach, and welcome shame,
If Thou remember me.]

5[When torn with pain, disease, or grief,
I pray for help to Thee;
Grant patience, rest, and kind relief:
Hear, and remember me!]

6 And when at last I sink in death,
And meet thy just decree;

Then, Saviour! watch my failing breath,
And still remember me!

Coming to Christ just as we are.

John i, 29. 1 John i, 7. Rev. iii, 17, 18.

1 JUST as I am-without one plea,
But that thy blood was shed for me,

And that Thou bidd'st me come to Thee-
O Lamb of God, I come!
