NOTE E E. Page 115.

Perhaps it is only when the immortal soul is about to disengage itself from this body of death that even the best Christian can say, "Lord, into thy hands I commend my spirit." Until that moment the carnal self will struggle for the mastery: whatever may be the sect to which we belong, or the doctrines we hold, still self, the canker-worm of the human heart, will by its insidious workings taint even the purest creed, and darken the clearest understanding. What then can heal, or at least mitigate this universal moral disease? Nothing but the keeping our eyes steadily fixed on the cross: "Christ crucified for my sins" is a reflection which, if constantly dwelt upon, would be powerful enough to dethrone self, and compel it to abdicate its unhallowed and all-engrossing supremacy.

THE END.

J. DENNETT, UNION BUILDINGS, LEATHER LANE.
