162 I rejoice at Thy word,

As one that findeth great spoil.

163 I hate and abhor lying:

But Thy law do I love.

164 Seven times a day do I praise Thee, Because of Thy righteous judgments.

165 Great peace have they which love Thy law: And nothing shall offend them.

166 Lord, I have hoped for Thy salvation, And done Thy commandments.

167 My soul hath kept Thy testimonies; And I love them exceedingly.

168 I have kept Thy precepts and Thy testimonies : For all my ways are before Thee.

REFLECTIONS.

To stand in awe of God's word, to account it our invaluable treasure, and to love it as the truth; this is the way to be happy. Then indeed we shall praise God, and have great peace. If we hope for salvation through faith in Christ, and do God's commandments, ordering our conversation as those who are always in God's sight, we have the greatest reason to rejoice; and this is the excellence which we ought to seek, and in which we ought to abound.

PART 22. TAU.

169 Let my prayer come near before Thee, O Lord; Give me understanding according to Thy word.

170 Let my supplication come before Thee:

Deliver me according to Thy word.

171 My lips shall utter praise,

When Thou hast taught me Thy statutes. 172 My tongue shall speak of Thy word:

For all Thy commandments are righteousness. 173 Let Thy hand help me;

For I have chosen Thy precepts.

174 I have longed for Thy salvation, O Lord; And Thy law is my delight.

175 Let my soul live, and it shall praise Thee; And let Thy judgments help me.

176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep;

Seek Thy servant;

For I do not forget Thy commandments.

REFLECTIONS.

We must pray for understanding and for deliverance; and when we are taught of God, and are freed from our enemies, we shall abound in praise. Help, salvation, and spiritual life are God's gifts. Happy are we, if we delight in His law, if we seek these blessings, and never forget His commandments. We oft indeed go astray: how needful, then, the petition that our gracious Shepherd would restore our souls! Psalm xxiii. 3.

DAY 27.]

PSALM CXX.

MORNING PRAYER.

Prayer, as Psalm iv. Some ascribe it to David: others think that it was written after the captivity.

(I. Prayer in trouble.)

1 In my distress I cried unto the Lord,

And He heard me.

2 Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips, And from a deceitful tongue.

3 What shall be given unto thee?

Or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue? 4 Sharp arrows of the mighty,

With coals of juniper.

5 Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech,

That I dwell in the tents of Kedar!

6 My soul hath long dwelt with him that hateth

[blocks in formation]

But when I speak, they are for war.

REFLECTIONS.

Falsehood, deceit, and strife-such are some of the evils which may compel us to say at times, Woe is me! Our comfort is, that God will hear our prayers, preserve, comfort, and deliver us. But the wicked will do well to remember, that, however they persecute and grieve the pious for a season, the awful judgments of God will fall upon them.

PRAYER.

Whatever we may suffer from the ungodly, help us, O Lord, to be patient in well doing, and to call upon Thee; knowing that Thou wilt preserve, deliver, and bless us. In the cultivation of peace and holiness, may we glorify Thee, till we change the tents of earth for the mansions of peace and glory above. Amen.

PSALM CXXI.

Instructive, as Psalm i.

(Happiness of the godly.)

1 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills,
From whence cometh my help.
2 My help cometh from the Lord,
Which made heaven and earth.

3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved :
He that keepeth thee will not slumber.
4 Behold, He that keepeth Israel

Shall neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The Lord is thy keeper:

The Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. 6 The sun shall not smite thee by day,

Nor the moon by night.

7 The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil : He shall preserve thy soul.

8 The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in

From this time forth, and even for evermore.

:

REFLECTIONS.

In all our troubles, at all times, and in all places, we should remember that God is our Helper, and look up and pray to Him. A godly man has no cause for fear the unslumbering eye of God is always upon him for good. Neither the powers of earth nor of hell shall hurt him. All his goings shall be established: he shall walk in the path of righteousness, and his soul shall be preserved unto everlasting life.

PRAYER.

Grant, O Lord, that, amidst the dangers of this sinful world, we may always be safe in Thy protection. Watch over us, we beseech Thee, and preserve us in our going out and coming in. To Thee may we always look for help, and praise Thee for Thy goodness to us, through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

PSALM CXXII.

Prayer of Intercession, as Psalm xx. A song of David.
(I. Joy for divine ordinances.)

1 I was glad when they said unto me,
Let us go into the house of the Lord.
2 Our feet shall stand

Within thy gates, O Jerusalem.

(II. Internal government of the Church.)

3 Jerusalem is builded as a city
That is compact together:
4 Whither the tribes go up,
The tribes of the Lord,

Unto the testimony of Israel,

To give thanks unto the Name of the Lord. 5 For there are set thrones of judgment, The thrones of the house of David.

(III. Prayer for peace.)

6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem : They shall prosper that love thee. 7 Peace be within thy walls,
