1 GREAT God! the nations of the earth
Are by creation thine;

And in thy works, by all beheld,
Thy power and glory shine.

2 But, Lord, thy greater love hath sent
Thy gospel to mankind,

Unvailing what rich stores of grace
Are treasured in thy mind.

3 Oh, when shall these glad tidings spread
The spacious earth around,
Till every tribe and every soul
Shall hear the joyful sound?

4 Smile, Lord, on each divine attempt
To spread the gospel's rays,

And build on sin's demolished throne
The temples of thy praise.

[blocks in formation]

Thou Prince of life! arise,

Nor let thy glory cease;

Far spread the conquests of thy grace, And bless the earth with peace.

3 Thou Holy Ghost! arise,-
Extend thy healing wing,

And o'er a dark and ruined world
Let light and order spring.

4 O all ye nations! rise,

To God the Saviour sing;

From shore to shore, from earth to heave! Let echoing anthems ring!

[blocks in formation]

1 JESUS shall reign where'er the sun
Does his successive journeys run;
His kingdom stretch from shore to shord
Till moons shall wax and wane no more

2 People and realms of every tongue
Dwell on his love with sweetest song;
And infant voices shall proclaim
Their early blessings on his name.

3 Blessings abound where'er he reigns; The prisoner leaps to loose his chains; The weary find eternal rest,

And all the sons of want are blest.

4 Let every creature rise and bring
Peculiar honors to our King:
Angels descend with songs again,
And carth repeat the loud Amen!

hands."

WHEN shall the voice of singing
Flow joyfully along?
When hill and valley, ringing
With one triumphant song,
Proclaim the contest ended,

And him who once was slain,
Again to earth descended,

In righteousness to reign? Then from the craggy mountains The sacred shout shall fly; And shady vales and fountains Shall echo the reply: High tower and lowly dwelling

Shall send the hymn around,

All hallelujah swelling

In one eternal sound!

132 "Waft, waft, ye winds, his story”

FROM Greenland's icy mountains,
From India's coral strand,
Where Afric's sunny fountains
Roil down their golden sand,—
From many an ancient river,
From many a palmy plain,
They call us to deliver

Their land from error's chain.
What though the spicy breezes
Blow soft o'er Ceylon's isle;
Though every prospect pleases,
And only man is vile;
In vain with lavish kindness

The gifts of God are strown;
The heathen, in his blindness,

Bows down to wood and stone! Shall we, whose souls are lighted With wisdom from on high,Shall we to men benighted The lamp of life deny? Salvation, oh, salvation!

The joyful sound proclaim, Till each remotest nation

Has learned Messiah's name.
Waft, waft, ye winds, his story,
And you, ye waters, roll,
Till, like a sea of glory,

It spreads from pole to pole;
Till o'er our ransomed nature
The Lamb for sinners slain,
Redeemer, King, Creator,
In bliss returns to reign!

Psalm 14.

1 On that the Lord's salvation
Were out of Zion come,
To heal his ancient nation,
To lead his outcasts home!
How long the holy city
Shall heathen feet profane?
Return, O Lord, in pity;
Rebuild her walls again.

2 Let fall thy rod of terror;
Thy saving grace impart;
Roll back the vail of error;
Release the fettered heart:
Let Israel, home returning,
Their lost Messiah see;
Give oil of joy for mourning,
And bind thy church to thee.

1 DAUGHTER of Zion! from the dust
Exalt thy fallen head;
Again in thy Redeemer trust:

He calls thee from the dead.

2 Awake, awake! put on thy strength,
Thy beautiful array;

The day of freedom dawns at length,
The Lord's appointed day.

3 Rebuild thy walls, thy bounds enlarge,
And send thy heralds forth;

Say to the south, "Give up thy charge," And keep not back, O north!

4 They come, they come!-thine exiled bands,

Where'er they rest or roam,

Have heard thy voice in distant lands,
And hasten to their home.

5 Thus, though the universe shall burn,
And God his works destroy,

With songs thy ransomed shall return,
And everlasting joy.

1 SOUND, sound the truth abroad! Bear ye the word of God

Through the wide world: Tell what our Lord hath done; Tell how the day was won, And from his lofty throne Satan is hurled.

2 Far over sea and land,

'Tis our Lord's own command,
Bear ye his name:
Bear it to every shore;
Regions unknown explore;
Enter at every door-

Silence is shame.

3 Ye, who, forsaking all
At your loved Master's call,
Comforts resign;

Soon will the work be done; Soon will the prize be won; Brighter than yonder sun Then shall ye shine!

1 YES, my native land! I love thee;
All thy scenes, I love them well:
Home and friends that smile around mʊ,
Can I bid you all farewell?

Can I leave you,

Far in heathen lands to dwell?

7s & 6s. 2 Scenes of sacred peace and pleasure, Holy days and Sabbath bell,

And death's black shade no more.

2 O thou eternal Ruler!

Who holdest in thine arm The tempests of the ocean, Protect them from all harm! Thy presence still be with them, Wherever they may be: Though far from us who love them, Still let them be with thee!

Richest, brightest, sweetest treasure,
Can I - can I say "Farewell"?
Can I leave you,

Far in heathen lands to dwell?
3 Yes! I hasten from you gladly:
To the strangers let me tell
How he died the blessed Saviour
To redeem a world from hell:
Let me hasten

Far in heathen lands to dwell.
4 Bear me on, thou restless ocean;
Let the winds my canvas swell:
Heaves my heart with warm emotion
While I go far hence to dwell:
Glad I bid thee,

Native land, farewell, farewell!

1 Nor for the summer hour alone,
When skies resplendent shine,
And youth and pleasure fill the throne,
Our hearts and hands we join;

2 But for those stern and wint'ry days
Of sorrow, pain, and fear,

When heaven's wise discipline doth make Our earthly journey drear.

3 Not for this span of life alone,

Which like a blast doth fly,

And, as the transient flowers of grass,
Just blossom, droop, and die;

4 But for a being without end

This vow of love we take:
Grant us, O Lord, one home at last,
For thy great mercy's sake!

3 Clouds that drop refreshing dews;
Suns that genial heat diffuse;
Flocks that whiten all the plain;
Yellow sheaves of ripened grain;

4 All that Spring, with bounteous hand,
Scatters o'er the smiling land;
All that liberal Autumn pours
From her overflowing stores;

5 These, great God, to thee we owe,
Source whence all our blessings flow;
And, for these, our souls shall raise
Grateful vows, and solemn praise.

a song."

1 LET every heart rejoice and sing;

Let choral anthems rise;

Ye reverend men, and children, bring
To God your sacrifice:

For he is good, the Lord is good,
And kind are all his ways:

With songs and honors sounding loud,
The Lord Jehovah praise;

While the rocks and the rills, While the vales and the hills A glorious anthem raise, Let each prolong the grateful song, And the God of our fathers praise.

2 He bids the sun to rise and sct;

In heaven his power is known; And earth, subdued to him, shall yet Bow low before his throne: For he is good,

the Lord is good,

And kind are all his ways:

With songs and honors sounding loud,
The Lord Jehovah praise;

While the rocks and the rills,
While the vales and the hills
A glorious anthem raise,

Let each prolong the grateful song
And the God of our fathers praise.

of Thy people."

1 LIKE Israel's host to exile driven,
Across the flood the pilgrims fled;
Their hands bore up the ark of Heaven,
And Heaven their trusting footsteps led,
Till on these savage shores they trod,
And won the wilderness for God.

2 Then, when their weary ark found rest,
Another Zion proudly grew;
In more than Judah's glory dressed,
With light that Israel never knew:
From sea to sea her empire spread,
Her temple heaven, and Christ her Head.
3 Then let the grateful church, to-day,
Its ancient rite with gladness keep;
And still our fathers' God display

His kindness, though the fathers sleep:

Rich thy streams of mercy are — Flowing purely from above,

Beauty marks their course afar.
