what He did, and is Himself the first to dissolve the laws which He enacted. He is become a spectacle to the world, and, though silent, from hence He admonisheth the nations. Do not such things as I have, lest you should suffer what I suffer.

21. Illustrated by this event, the altar darts forth an unprecedented splendor, and shines a warning beacon to the earth. How tremendous, how august doth it appear, since it holds this lion in chains and crouching at your feet!

ST. CHRYSOSTOM.

97. SUPPLICATION.

FROM THE GREEK OF ST. CLEMENT OF ALEXANDRIA.

URB for the stubborn steed,

CURB

Making its will give heed;
Wing that directest right
The wild-bird's wandering flight;
Helm for the ships that keep
Their pathway o'er the deep;
Shepherd of sheep that own
Their Master on the throne-
Stir up thy children meek
With guileless lips to speak,
In hymn and song, thy praise,
Guide of their infant ways.
O King of Saints, O Lord,
Mighty, all-conquering Word:
Son of the highest God,
Wielding His Wisdom's rod,
Our stay when cares annoy,
Giver of endless joy;

Of all our mortal race

Saviour, of boundless grace,
O Jesus, hear!

2. "Shepherd and Sower thou,
Now helm, and bridle now,
Wing for the heavenward flight
Of flock all pure and bright;
Fisher of men, the blest,
Out of the world's unrest,
Out of sin's troubled sea,
Taking us, Lord, to thee;
Out of the waves of strife
With bait of blissful life,
With choicest fish good store,
Drawing thy nets to shore-
Lead us, O Shepherd true,
Thy mystic sheep, we sue.
Lead us, O Holy Lord,

Who from thy sons dost ward,
With all-prevailing charm,
Peril, and curse, and harm;
O Path where Christ has trod,
O Way that leads to God,
O Word, abiding aye,
O endless Light on high,
Mercy's fresh-springing blood,
Worker of all things good,
O glorious life of all

That on their Maker call,

Christ Jesus, hear!

8. "O Milk of Heaven, that pressed

From full, o'erflowing breast

Of her, the mystic Bride,
Thy Wisdom hath supplied;
Thine infant children seek,
With baby lips all weak,
Filled with the Spirit's dew
From that dear bosom true,

Thy praises pure to sing,

Hymns meet for Thee, our King,—
For Thee, the Christ;

4. "Our holy tribute this,

For wisdom, life, and bliss,
Singing in chorus meet,
Singing in concert sweet,
The Almighty Son.

5. "We, heirs of peace unpriced,
We who are born in Christ,
A people pure from stain,
Praise we our God again,

Lord of our Peace."

98. APPEAL FOR THE CRUSADES, TO THE PEOPLE OF

FRANCONIA.

[ST. BERNARD, at the age of twenty-three, entered the Monastery of Cityaux. To this extraordinary man was given in a moment the power to rule the minds of man. He passed from the depths of the cloister to the midst of the Court, as thoroughly a monk in one place as in the other. Scarcely a year of his life is unmarked by some great event. From his poor cell he governed all Europe. Nations and kings chose him to arbitrate their differences. Ambassadors were sent to his cloister. All the Orders of the West submitted themselves to the wisdom of his counsels. Pious bishops, learned men, with the sons of kings, placed themselves under his direction. Pope Eugenius called upon Bernard to preach the Crusades throughout France and Germany. Everywhere his appeal was received as an oracle, and men of every grade and every age enrolled themselves in this pious expedition.]

SPEAK to you of the interests of Christ, whereon depends your salvation. The authority of the Lord, and the consid eration of your own benefit, will excuse the unworthiness of him who addresses you. I am indeed of little consequence, but I earnestly desire that you be saved by the merits of Jesus Christ. Behold the time of salvation; the universe is moved, the whole world trembled because the God of Heaven is about to lose the land which was his abiding-place-the land where as man he passed more than thirty years with the children

of men; a land illustrated by his miracles, consecrated by his blood; a land wherein the first flowers of the Resurrection appeared.

2. To-day, on account of our sins, the enemies of the Cross have lifted their sacrilegious heads; they ravage this Holy Land, this Land of Promise, and none resist them; they throw themselves upon the city even of the living God; they overturn the monuments of our redemption; they desecrate the holy places, reddened with the blood of the spotless Lamb.

3. O Grief! their impious zeal burns to invade the very sanctuary of Christianity, to trample under foot the mysteri ous resting-place where Jesus, our Life, slept for us in the bosom of Death.

4. And you, brave men, you servants of the faith, will you thus deliver holy things to dogs, thus cast pearls before swine? Ah! how many confessing their sins with tears, have there obtained pardon since your fathers' swords purged away the Pagan hosts! The enemy of the human race saw it, and trem bled with rage; he stirred up the vessels of iniquity, and he will leave no trace, no vestige of so great a piety, if he succeed (which God forbid!) in making himself master of the Holy of Holies. What an inconsolable grief for all ages, for the loss will be irreparable!

5. But above all, what confusion, what eternal reproach for this perverse generation! Meanwhile, my brethren, what shall we think? That the hand of God is shortened, that His arm is powerless, that He calls worms of the earth to defend His inheritance? Could He not send legions of angels, or merely say the word, and the Holy Land would be free? He can do whatsoever He wills. But I say to you, the Lord your God wishes to prove you. He looks to the children of men, to see whether any will take part in His grief; for the Lord has

mercy upon His people.

6. He prepares means of salvation for those who have abandoned Him. See with what artifice He endeavors to save you. Sinners, consider the depth of His tenderness for you,

and take confidence. He wishes not your death, but only that you be converted and live; it is for this that He seeks an occasion, not against you, but for you. What better opportunity, and who but God could have found it, than this by which He recalls to His service, as if they had always practised justice, ravishers, homicides, perjurers, and all who have covered themselves with crimes?

7. Doubt not, sinners, the Lord is indulgent. If He wished to punish you, not only would He not demand your service, but He would refuse it when offered. I repeat it, think on the treasures of the Most High, reflect on His mercy. While He desires to come to your succor, He feigns to need yours for Himself; He wishes to appear as your debtor, that He may reward your service by the forgiveness of your sins, and the recompense of eternal glory.

8. Happy generation! I say unto you, who live in a time. so rich in indulgence. Since your land is fertile in brave men, in robust youth; since your glory and the fame of your valor have filled the world, let your zeal for the Christian name hasten you to take up those arms which have ever been crowned with victory. Yes! soldiers! press forward to the combat-press onward to the battle!

9. O noble and valiant warriors, to-day a war offers itself wherein you have every thing to gain, and nothing to fear; your triumph is a true glory; your fall a real good. And you, busied in amassing the treasures of this world, beware, lest you permit the treasures now offered you to escape. Take up the Cross, and you will obtain the pardon of all the sins you have confessed with a contrite heart.

10. This Cross is a little thing in itself, but if you carry it with devotion, it will purchase for you the kingdom of God. Those who already bear this celestial sign have done well; those who now follow their example will receive the same reward. But beware of too much precipitation in this enterprise. Choose from among you experienced and able chieftains; let the Army of the Lord move forward together, that thus in
