It has no pretensions to learning or research: its facts lie on the surface of history, or are taken from books in the hands of most persons The author is not so sanguine as to expect that he shall be able to carry his reader along with him; but should he rise from the perusal of these pages with a kindlier feeling towards his separated brethren, a quickened recollection of the miseries in which thousands of his fellow-countrymen are involved, and an earnest purpose

to do what he can to ameliorate their condition, spiritual and temporal-should this, under God, be the result, the writer's end will have been accomplished.
