And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without fhedding of blood is no remiffion. 23. It was therefore neceffary that the patterns of things in the heavens fhould be purified with these, but the heavenly things themfelves with better facrifices than thefe. 24.For Chrift is not entred into the ho ly placés made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven it felf, now to appear in the prefence of God for us: 25. Nor yet that he fhould offer himself often, as the high priest entreth into the holy place, every year with blood of others: 26. (For then muft he often have fuffered fince the foundation of the world) but now I once in the end of the world, hath he appeared to put away fin by the facrifice of himself. 27. And as it is appointed unto men once n to die, but after this the judgment: 28. So Chrift was once offered to bear the fins of many; and unto them that look for him, fhall he appear the fe cond time, without fin, unto falvation.

(1) The Apoftle here, warns Chriftians against forfaking the Publick Affemblies for the Worship of God; forafmuch as it would endanger their falling from their Chriftian Profeffion. Hereby we not only neglect a Duty which natural Religion requires us to perform, but lofe the Advantages of joining together in publick Worship, as hearing the Word of God, Prayer, Praife, and receiving the holy Sacrament, &c. As this is a Duty not to be neglected, so we ought to take care to prepare our felves before hand for it, that our Services may be acceptable to God. Some at this time neglected this neceffary Duty, for fear of being taken notice of, and coming into Trouble upon this account. If the Apoftle did not allow this as a good Reafon for Abfenting from publick Worship, What Cenfure would he pafs upon that Multitude of Chriftians, who now abfent from publick Worship, not for fear of Perfecution, but meerly out of Sloth and Laziness, if not out of Contempt of God and his Service. If any omit publick Worship from an Apprehenfion that they receive greater Illuminations and Improvements in Private, than they can in Publick; they fhould confider, that private and publick Worship are Duties not oppofed to each other, but fuch as every ferious Chriftian ought to practife in their Time and Place; and I would earneftly recommend it to them ferioufly and impartially to try and examine by what Spirit they are led. That the Intereft of that Spirit, who is oppofed to the holy Spirit, would be highly promoted, were publick Worfhip to be laid afide, cannot reafonably be doubted. For were it not for the frequent returns of publick Worship, the Wickednefs of the World would be greater than it is, And I am fully perfwaded, that no one thing conduces more to Mens Apoftatizing from the Chriftian Religion, and fettling in down right Infidelity, than this bad Cuftom of forfaking the publick Assemblies of Chriftians for the Worship of God.

(2) It is plain from Verfes 23, and 29, that by finning wilfully, is meant, the Falling from the Profeffion of our Faith by Apoftacy. And that fuch, if they return and repent, may be pardoned, has been fhewn in the Note on Heb. 6. 4. But becaufe fome have thought that by finning wilfully may be meant the being guilty of wilful Sins after they have been Baptized, and made profeffion of Religion, and have thereby been almoft driven to defpair, imagining that they could not be admitted to Repentance, I will endeavour by fome plain Paffages of Scripture to give them Comfort, and to fhew them their Miftake.
