(1) Thefe Words are not to be understood in the most general Senfe, but with fome reftriction. For it is certain we may not do any thing forbidden by God. For the clearer Underftanding of them, we may 'diftinguish things, First, Into fuch as are neceffary, that is, fuch as are commanded by God, either by the Law and light of Nature, or right Reafon, or in the holy Scriptures. Thefe are not only lawful to be done, but it would be finful to omit the doing of them. Secondly, Into fuch as are forbidden, either by the Word of God, or the Reafon and Nature of Things. Thefe, however expedient they may appear to be, are utterly unlawful. Thirdly, There are other things of a middle Nature, which, generally fpeaking, may be done, or left undone, without fin; and to this kind of Things muft thefe Words be reftrained. All fuch things are in themselves indifferent, as being neither commanded nor forbidden by God. But this notwithstanding, it may be fometimes expedient to forbear doing them; for inftance: When it would offend our weak Brother, whofe Confcience may not be rightly inform'd concerning the Nature and Ufe of them.
