Seite 136 - Castle was held by Stephen de Brampton for Edward I, and in 1298-9 was besieged by the Scots, who stormed it after a tedious blockade of more than fourteen months. In his report to the English king, de Brampton tells how he defended the castle "against the power of Scotland for a year and nine weeks, to his great loss and misfortune, as all his companions died in the castle except himself and those with him who were taken by famine and by assault.
