PREFATORY NOTE.

IN preparing a New Edition of the following Sketches, I have carefully revised them, and somewhat extended those of Luther, Latimer, and Knox, where I considered them deficient in historical outline. The sketch of Calvin-which has been the subject of special criticism from different points of view-remains comparatively untouched. The estimate which it presents, both of Calvin and his work, will, I have no doubt, justify itself more and more in the face of impartial historical investigation; and I write only for those who are capable at least of understanding the spirit which prompts such investigation, and finds pleasure in it rather than in the mere assumptions of an unreasoning dogmatism. My aim, as stated in the sketch itself, was not to enter into any details of religious controversy, but merely to expound the general spirit and character of Calvin's theology, in so far as "they serve to explain his historical position;" and to this aim I adhere.
