HYMNS

ON

THE COLLECTS.

FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT.

EHOLD! the darkness flies away,
The dawning light draws near,
nd ushers in a glorious day;
The Saviour shall appear.

The Sun of Righteousness shall rise,
With healing in his wings;

To him ye nations turn your eyes,
And leave all meaner things.

The dark designs and ways of sin,
No longer now pursue;

life of purest joy begin,

Let all your works be new.

The Saviour, who on earth was found, In meek and lowly state,

Shall also come with trumpet's sound, In heav'nly glory great.

Then welcome him! in armour bright,
Appear before his throne,

That ye may dwell before his sight,
And make his praises known.

THE SECOND SUNDAY.

1 ALMIGHTY and eternal Lord,
Reveal on earth thy gracious Word;
Let us thy heav'nly counsels know,
And see the way wherein to go.

2 Impress our hearts with what we hear,
And fill our souls with holy fear;
Thy promised aid may we receive,
And in thy Gospel's truth believe.
3 Thy Word affords a cheering light,
To guide our wand'ring feet aright;
It warns us when we go astray,
And up to heaven points out the way.
4 When we sink down, it cheers our soul,
And makes the contrite spirit whole;
May we digest its precepts well,
And in thy presence always dwell!

THE THIRD SUNDAY.

1 O THOU, who holdest in thy hand
The stars of light and worlds above,
And sendest forth, in every land,
Thy messengers of truth and love;
2 As he did once prepare thy way,
Who came with hairy garments clad,
The herald of that glorious day,
Which made the gloomy regions glad.
Thus bless again, thou Saviour dear,
Thy servants who thy Word proclaim;
So let thine arm again appear,

Make known on earth thy gracious name.

4 Bring mountains low and raise the plains,
And make the barren deserts spring
With verdure green; and free from pains,
Let Adam's sons thy goodness sing.

5 Let sinners turn from evil ways,
And now thy saving truth embrace;
Fill mourning hearts with joyful praise,
And spread thy light through every place.

THE FOURTH SUNDAY.

ISE up thy power, O mighty Lord!
And succour us we pray;

we on earth are hinder'd sore,
And often miss our way.

soon forget our heav'nly race,
And sink with anxious care;
!let us find Thee present still,
And still thy blessings share.
sins are great, thy mercy shew,
Through Christ our prayers receive;
us thy power and goodness prove,
Dur various wants relieve.

thy great love may we rejoice,
And see that glorious day
en Jesus shall again return,
And all his power display.

fore thy presence may we stand,
n robes of glory bright,

d sing thy praise with accents sweet,
n everlasting light.

CHRISTMAS-DAY.

MIGHTY God thy grace display,
d chase the shades of night away;
y Son descended here below,
at we thy saving truth might know,
came on earth, in tender love,
raise our souls to thee above;
virgin pure was Jesus born,

d pass'd through hatred, grief, and scorn.

y renovating power impart,

cheer our new created heart;

at we, now made thy children here,
y walk with thee in pious fear.

y Holy Spirit now bestow,

at we in grace and truth may grow,
y sons on earth, till we shall rise,
dwell with thee above the skies.
