HAVING, in the former volumes, gi ven the public a correct edition of all Dr. Swift's genuine works, from the only authentic edition of them published at Dublin, it was judged proper to complete the collection by this additional volume; which confifts of mifcellaneous pieces compofed by Dr. Arbuthnot, Mr. Pope, and Mr. Gay. As they are of the fame fpirit and ftrain with Dr. Swift's works, and have been published along with. them in feveral former editions, we believed it would be agreeable to most readers to find them in this collection. We can affure the public, that, excepting a few low and fpurious pieces which have been rejected by perfons of tafte, as unworthy of Dr. Swift, or any of his friends, our edition completed by this appendix, comprehends all that is contained in any of the London editions of Dr. Swift's works; with this advantage, that the genuine compofitions of that celebrated author, are distinguished and kept apart from thofe of his friends contained in this volume.. |
