PREFATORY NOTE.

ON all the subjects here treated, volumes thick and numerous have been written. Why, then, it may be asked, treat these subjects in so brief and summary a manner? The answer is because the mass of the people have neither the time nor the ability to read elaborate treatises on the subjects in question. And yet it is of vast importance that they should know somewhat of great Bible truths. Ignorant of the Scriptures, men may be wise in matters of art and science, but they are not 'wise unto salvation,' and it must be admitted by all who believe in an eternal future for man, that to be made wise unto salvation is emphatically the one thing needful.' This is the Author's brief apology for sending forth to the public this little book of 'Scripture Verities.'

The book, he trusts, will be found useful to many in these days of religious doubt and avowed scepticism especially when a so-called 'new theology' is finding favour with a certain class of preachers and writers. A new theology, forsooth! as if the old Pauline theology had become effete, and was no longer to be considered as the infallible standard of faith and practice. Now, so far as the new theology differs from the old Pauline theology, so far is it false. In that case it is another Gospel,' and the two gospels, or rather the two theologies, the old and the new, cannot be both true. Which, then, is the true, the old or the new? I speak as unto wise men; judge ye what I

say.'

To the question, 'Canst thou by searching find out God, canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?' the answer must be an emphatic No. The finite cannot find out the infinite, the limitable cannot reach the illimitable. The Eternal God must for ever remain an eternal mystery, the wonder of the universe and the one object of universal worship. And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing and honour and glory and power be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever'
