Our toils and trials, such they seem
In sufferance, if Heaven's pure beam
Aid our dull erring sense,
In the bright glory of Thy love
May take a glorious change, and prove
Thy daily providence.

To Thee, our Maker, now we raise
Our voices, and devoutly praise

Our God, our Heavenly King:
The Saviour, Thou! the Lord of all!
The Comforter, to hear our call,
And soothe our suffering!

X.

AND doth the Saviour weep
Over his people's sin,

Because we will not let him keep
The souls He died to win?

Ye hearts that love the Lord,

If at this sight ye burn,

See that in thought, in deed, in word,

Ye hate what made Him mourn!

AND do we then believe

There is a world to come,

Where all this world shall summon'd be,
To take their final doom?

Is there a Heaven indeed,
Where we may enter in?
Is there a Hell, and fearful pains,
For unrepented sin ?

Are these eternal too,
And never to have end?
Shall never these delights decay,
These sorrows never mend?

Can this be fixed and true?
And all most true it is!

And yet we live as if there were
Nothing so false as this.

O quicken, Lord! our faith
Of these great hopes and fears,
And make the Last Day's trumpet be
Still sounding in our ears!

Still make this glorious hope Shine bright before our eyes, That we at last go up to meet Our Saviour in the skies!

ANOTHER day is come! May we
Have hearts to feel, and eyes to see!
To look about, and choose the way
We mean to travel o'er this day!

To think on dangers we may meet,
And always watch our sliding feet!
Think where we once have fallen before,
And mark the place, and fall no more!

To own the helps our God bestows,
And cast to steer our course by those!
To think on pains that must torment
All sinners that will not repent!

To think how we at last shall fare,
If we go on where now we are!
See life and death set us to chuse!
One we must take, and one refuse.
The Spirit, for the Saviour's sake,
Govern this day the course we take!
Still make us walk, still make us tend,
By Him our Way, to Him our end!

As erst the pillar, that our God
Appointed for His people's guide,
Was light to them along their road,
But darkness to King Pharaoh's pride;
So now His word is light to all

Who love to guide their course thereby ;
And darkness still to those who call
On Idols, and the Cross deny.

O Lord! in mercy, for His sake

Who bore for us a mortal birth, And died upon the cross, to make

Atonement for the tribes of earth, Soon let His word to all give light, Thy Spirit set each bondsman free! Let none be lost in sin and night,

But all be turn'd in Christ to Thee.

XIV.

As the bright sun from on high
Shines on every place the same,
So the Lord is always nigh,

To the souls that love His name.

When they move at duty's call,
He is with them by the way;
He is ever with them all,

Those who go, and those who stay. From His holy mercy-seat

Nothing can their souls confine;
Still in spirit they may meet,
And in deep communion join.
For a season call'd to part,

Let us then ourselves commend
To the gracious eye and heart
Of our ever-present Friend.
Jesus! hear our humble prayer!
Tender Shepherd of thy sheep,
Let Thy mercy and Thy care
All our souls in safety keep!

XV.

AT night lie down ;
Prepare to have
Thy sleep, thy death,
Thy bed, thy grave!

Awake! arise!

Think that thou hast

Thy life but lent,

Thy breath a blast.

AWAKE our souls, and with the sun

The daily course of duty run!
Shake off dull sloth, and gladly rise,
To pay our morning sacrifice!

All praise to Him, who safely kept,
And thus refresh'd us while we slept!
O may we, when from death we wake,
His blessing and His love partake!
Direct, O Lord! controul, this day,
All we design, or do, or say;

That all our powers, with all their might,
In Thy sole glory may unite!

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow!
Praise Him, all creatures here below!
Praise Him, above, ye heavenly host!
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!

XVII.

BEFORE Jehovah's awful throne,
Ye nations, bow with sacred joy!
Know, that the Lord is God alone;
He can create, and He destroy.

KEN.

His sovereign power, without our aid,
Made us of clay, and form'd us men;
And when, like wandering sheep, we stray'd,
He brought us to His fold again.

We will crowd Thy gates with thankful songs,
High as the heavens our voices raise;
And earth, with her ten thousand tongues,
Shall fill Thy courts with sounding praise!

Wide as the world is Thy command;
Vast as eternity Thy love;

Firm as a rock Thy truth shall stand,
When rolling years shall cease to move!

WATTS.
