ADVERTISEMENT. THE following desultory papers are some of a series written on the spots described, and were intended to have formed part of a publication connected with the South of Europe. It is not necessary to trouble the public with a detail of the circumstances which have brought them forward, or with excuses for their mediocrity. Of the two Journals it may be right to state, that the one containing an account of the Grande Chartreuse, has been selected from the papers of a gentleman, who died on the continent some years back, a victim to distress of mind, brought on by some unfortunate family events. The other is printed from the manuscripts of the late Countess of *** then Mrs. *** It was kept near fifty years ago, when the manners of kings and queens, of courts and travellers, being unlike those of our times, it becomes the more interesting to the traveller of the present day. |
