PREFACE.

In presenting this manual to the public, it is but just to say that the plan of it is the same as that adopted by Fisk and Allen, in their Questions upon the Scriptures. In the historical parts of Scripture, there must of course be a great uniformity in all questions upon the same texts.

The

author's own experience had taught him, before either of the above works had fallen into his hands, that questions requiring for answers the exact language of scripture, did not give that exercise to the scholar's mind which was desirable. This led him to adopt another mode, viz. to give out chapters, and ask such questions as were calculated to lead the scholar to a right understanding of the passage. But this was found to be somewhat discouraging, as the exact questions could not be anticipated by the scholar. This led him to the thought of preparing something adapted to the wants of our schools.

With the approbation and advice of his brethren, he has undertaken this work. He has followed in many respects the judicious arrangement of Allen, but has deviated so far as to adapt the work to our views. He has labored to exhibit the character of God, and his design in the kingdom of grace, more fully than in any work that has fallen into his hands. He has also endeavored to exhibit some of the evidence of divine revelation, that
