DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION.

OFFICE OF STATE SUPERINTENDENT,

.

NASHVILLE, TENN., Dec. 15, 1885.

To His Excellency Wm. B. Bate, Governor of Tennessee:

SIR-I have the honor to transmit herewith the Annual Report of the Superintendent of Public Instruction of the State, for the Scholastic Year ending June 30, 1885.

Very respectfully, your obedient servant,

THOMAS H. PAINE,

State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

REPORT.

[ocr errors]

It is evident, from the accompanying statistics, that our Public Schools throughout the State are steadily advancing, both as to interest in them upon the part of the people and the work done by the teachers and pupils. The following summaries indicate the general condition of the schools for the year ending June 30, 1885, and show the receipts and expenditures of public money.

SCHOLASTIC POPULATION BETWEEN THE AGES OF SIX AND TWENTY-ONE

[blocks in formation]

This is exclusive of the county of Henderson. The report of this county gives the scholastic population, white and colored, without regard to sex, and therefore can only be placed in the total columns. The total white of Henderson is 4,514; the total colored is 683—making a grand total for the county of 5,197. Adding this to the grand total of the State gives a scholastic population of 609,028-an increase over that of the preceding year of 23,637. This omission of Henderson in certain columns explains why the total male and total female in Table No. 1 of the Appendix do not make the total white as found in that table, and the same of the colored male and colored female.
