And he (Jesus) sent "them" ("his twelve disciples") to preach the kingdom of God. Lu. ix. 2. Be ye sure of this (said Christ to his disciples), that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. Lu. x. 11. If I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. Lu. xi. 20. The law and the prophets were until John, Since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. Lu. xvi. 16. And when he was demanded of the Pharisees when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them, and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation. Lu. xvii. 20. The kingdom of God is not meat or drink; but righteousness and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. Ro. xiv. 17. (God) who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son. Col. i. 13. Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. He. xii. 28.

29 How can one enter into a strong man's house?] Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered? xlix. 24. Therefore will I divide him (Christ) a portion with the great; and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he hath poured out his soul unto death, and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sins of many, and made intercession for transgressors ? Is. liii. 12. No man can enter into a strong man's house and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man, and then he will spoil his house. Mar. iii. 27. When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace; but when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. Lu. xi. 21, 22. He that committeth sin is of the devil, for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 1 John iii. 8. are of God, little children, and have overcome them" ("the spirits" that pretend to come from God), because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. 1 John iv. 4. And there was war in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not, neither was there place found any more in heaven; and the great dragon was

And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salva, tion, and strength, and the kingdom of on God, and the power of his Christ. For the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. Re. xii. 7-10. And I saw an angel co down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit, and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old ser pent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and board him a thousand years, and cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, that be should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled, and after that he must be loosed a little season. – And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison; and shall ge out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle. The num ber of whom is as the sand of the sea. And they went up on the breadth of the earth; and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city, and fire came dow from God out of heaven, and devoured them. Re. xx. 1, 2, 3. 7, 8, 9.

30 That is not with me, &c.] See chap, vi 24. It came to pass when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand, and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us or for our adversaries? Josh v. 13. And David went out to meet them ( the children of Benjamin who came to the hold unto David), and answered and said unte them, If ye be come peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be knit unto you. But if ye be come to betray me to mine enemies, seeing there is no wrong in mine hands, the God of our fathers look thereon and rebuke it. Then the spirit came upon Amasai, wh was chief of the captains, and he said, Thing are we, David, and on thy side, thou son of Jesse. Peace, peace be unto thee; and peace be to thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee, Ye 1 Ch. xii. 17, 18. He that is not against us is on our part. Mar. ix. 40. He that is not against us is for us. Lu. ix. 50. He that a not with me is against me, and he that ga thereth not with me scattereth. L. xi. 23. What concord hath Christ with Belial; at what part hath he that believeth with an in fidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple af the living God, as God hath said, I will dwel

in them and walk in them, and I will be their God and they shall be my people. 2 Co. vi. 15, 16. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us; but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. 1 John ii. 19. I know thy works (said he that is holy to the church of Laodicea), that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot; so then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew thee out of my mouth. Re, iii. 15, 16.

* Gathereth not with me, &c.] The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come, and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. Ge. xlix. 10. Ps. 1.5. Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land. Hos. i. 11. Being high priest that year, he (Caiaphas) prophesied, that Jesus should die for that nation, and not for that nation only, but also that he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. John xi. 52.

131 All manner of sin, &c.] Though your sins be as scarlet (saith God), they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. Is. i. 18. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Is lv. 7. As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn ye, turn ye, from your evil ways, for why will ye die, O house of Israel? Ez. xxxiii. 11. I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith, and love, which is in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Tim. i. 12-15. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John i. 9. If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: and he is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. John ii. 1, 2..

But the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost.] Verily I say unto you, all sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewithsoever they shall blaspheme; but he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost, hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation. Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit. Mar. iii. 28, 29, 30. Whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him, but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven. Lu. xii. 10. Ye stiff-necked in heart and ears, ye do alway resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. Ac. vii. 51. It is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. He. vi. 4-6. If we sin wilfully, after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries, He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses. Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and counted the blood of the covenant wherewith he was sanctified an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? He. x. 26-29. If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death; there is a sin unto death. 1 John v. 16.

32 Whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, &c.] See chap. xi. 19. Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? And his sisters, are they not all with us? Mat. xiii. 55, 56. Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. Lu. xxiii. 34. And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him, for some said, He is a good man; others said, Nay, but he deceiveth the people. Art thou also of Galilee? (said the Pharisees) search and look, for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet. John vii. 12. 52. But ye denied the Holy One, and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; and killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead, whereof we are witnesses. Repent ye, therefore, and be converted,

but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. 33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the

tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his 34 fruit. O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good

that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. Ac. iii. 14, 15. 19. Verily I thought with myself (said Paul), that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth, which thing I also did in Jerusalem. And many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them. And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceeding mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities. Ac. xxvi. 9, 10, 11. I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Ti. i. 12, 13. 15.

But whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost.] This (he that believeth on me, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water) spake he of the Spirit which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given, because that Jesus was not yet glorified. John vii. 39. See verse 31.

It shall not be forgiven him.] The hypocrites in heart heap up wrath; they cry not when he bindeth them. Job xxxvi. 13. See verse 31. And in hell "he" ("the rich man” in the parable) lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried, and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy life-time receivedst thy good things, and Lazarus evil things, but now he is comforted and thou art tormented. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot, neither can they pass to us that would come from thence. Lu. xvi. 23-26.

33 Make the tree good.] Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Mat. xxiii. 26. Cast away from you all your transgressions whereby ye have transgressed, and make you a new heart, and a new spirit for why will ye die, O house of

Israel? Ez. xviii. 31. Hate the evil and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate. Am. v. 15. Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and platter, but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness; ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also? Lu. xi. 39, 40. Draw nigh to God and he will draw nigh to you: cleanse your hands, ye sinners, and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Ja. iv. 8.

And his fruit good.] See chap. iii. 8, 9, 10. and vii. 16-20. For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit, neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit; for every tree is known by his fruit, for of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. Lu. vi. 43, 44. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine, no more can ye, except ye abide în me. I am the vine (said Jesus), ye are the branches. He that abideth in me and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered, and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. John xv. 4-7. the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries! either a vine figs ? So can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. Ja. iii. 12. 34 Generation of vipers.] See chap. iii. 7. How can ye, being evil?] As saith the proverb of the ancients, wickedness proceedeth from the wicked (said David to Sarl). 1 Sa. xxiv. 13. He (the wicked) hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved, for I shall never be in adversity. His mouth is full of cursing, and deceit, and fraud; under his tongue is mischief and vanity. Ps. x. 6, 7. tongue (said David to Doeg, as a wicked man) deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. Thou lovest evil more than good, and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue. God shall likewise destroy thee for ever. He shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of thy dwelling-place, and root thee out of the land of the living. Ps. li. 2-5. The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God; corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity; there is none that doeth good. Ps. liii. 1. Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked, who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to

things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth 35

shoot their arrows, even bitter words, that they may shoot in secret at the perfect. Suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not; they encourage themselves in an evil matter, they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them? Ps. liv. 3, 4, 5. Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue. What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue? Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of Juniper. Ps. cxx. 2, 3, 4. Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man, preserve me from the violent man, which imagine mischiefs in their heart: continually are they gathered together for war. They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent, adder's poison is under their lips. Ps. cxl. 1, 2, 3. For the vile person will speak villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to practise hypocrisy, and to utter error against the Lord, to make empty the soul of the hungry; and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail. Is. xxxii. 6. None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth; they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity. And judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off'; for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter. Is. lix. 4. 14. Stand in the gate of the Lord's house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the Lord, all ye of Judah, that enter in at these gates to worship the Lord. Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place. Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, are these. For if you throughly amend your ways, and your doings; if ye throughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbour; if ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not inno cent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt; then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever. Je. vii. 2-7. As it is written (says Paul), there is none righteous, no not one, there is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way; there is none that doeth good, no not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips, whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood. Destruction and misery are in their ways; and the way of peace have they not known. There is no fear of God before their eyes. Ro. iii. 10-18. Even so, the tongue is a little member, and boasteth

great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth; and the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity; so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature, and it is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed and hath been tamed of mankind; but the tongue can no man tame, it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Ja. iii. 5-8.

For out of the abundance of the heart.] A good man, out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart, bringeth forth that which is evil. of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh Lu. vi. 45. See Mat. vii. 16. 18.

For

35 Good man out of the good treasure, &c.] Every Scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven, is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old. Mat. xiii. 52. The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment; the law of his God is in his heart, none of his steps shall slide. Ps. xxxvii. 30, 31. The tongue of the just is as choice silver; the heart of the wicked is little worth; the lips of the righteous feed many, but fools die for want of wisdom. Pr. x. 20, 21. The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood, but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them. He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness, but a false witness, deceit. There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword; but the tongue of the wise is health. The lip of truth shall be established for ever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment. Pr. xii. 6. 17-19. A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness therein is a breach in the Spirit. A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth, and a word spoken in due season, how good is it! The heart of the righteous studieth to answer, but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things. Pr. xv. 4. 23. 28. The wise in heart shall be called prudent, and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning; understanding is a well-spring of life unto him that hath it, but the instruction of fools is folly; the heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips. Pr. xvi. 21-23. A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver. As an ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear. Pr. xxv. 11, 12. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. Ep. iv. 29. Let the word of Christ dwell in you

good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth 36 forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of 37 judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy 38 words thou shalt be condemned. Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign 39 from thee. But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign

richly, in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Col. iii. 16. Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. Col. iv. 6. See chap. xiii. 52.

And an evil man out of the evil treasure.] See verse 34.

36 Every idle word.] God shall bring every idle work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good or whether it be evil. Ec. xii. 14. As many as have sinned without law, shall also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law, shall be judged by the law, in the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my Gospel. Ro. ii. 12. 16. Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting (let them not once be named among you), which are not convenient, but rather giving of thanks; for this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ, and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words; for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Ep, v. 4-6. Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousand of his saints, to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him. Ju. 14, 15. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God and the books were opened, and another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. Re. xx. 12.

37 By thy words.] He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life, but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. Pr. xiii. 3. Justified, &c.] Shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? And the Scripture was

fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness, and he was called The friend of God. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers and had sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. Ja. ii. 18. 21-26.

38 Master, we would see a sign from thee.] The Pharisees also, with the Sadducees, came, and tempting, desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven. He answered and said unto them, When it is evening ye say, It will be fair weather, for the sky is red; and in the morning it will be foul weather to-day, for the sky is red and louring. O ye hypocrites! ye can discern the face of the sky, but can ye not discern the signs of the times? A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign, and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. Mat. xvi. 1-4. And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven, tempting him. And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? Verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation. Mar. viii. 11, 12. Others tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven. And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation, they seek a sign, and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet Lu. xi. 16. 29. Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things! John ii. 18. Except ye see signs and wonders (said Jesus to the nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum), ye will not believe. Joka iv. 48. The Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom. 1 Co. i. 22.

39 Adulterous generation.] Draw near hither, ye sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer, and the whore, against whom do ye sport yourselves? Is. lvii. 3. Whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed when he cometh in the glory of his Father, with the holy angels. Mar. viii. 38. Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that
