Lu. viii. 49. When "he" ("a certain nobleman of Capernaum") heard that Jesus was come out of Judea into Galilee, he went unto him and besought him that he would come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders ye will not believe. The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die. John iv. 47-49.

Come and lay thy hand upon her.] See chap. viii. 8, 9. Naaman was wroth, and went away and said, Behold, I thought he will surely come out to me, and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, and strike his hand over the place and recover the leper. 2 Ki. v. 11. Then (as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming) said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died; but I know that even now whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection and the life; he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: then when Mary (Martha's sister) was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here my brother had not died. John xi. 21, 22. 25. 32.

19 Arose, and followed him.] See chap. viii. 7, and com. My meat (said Jesus) is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. John iv. 34. John preached how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power, who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, for God was with him. Ac. x. 38. Let us not be weary in well doing, for in due season we shall reap if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. Ga. vi. 9, 10.

20 Behold, a woman, &c.] And a certain woman who had an issue of blood twelve years came in the press behind, and touched

his garment. Mar. v. 25. 27. And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living on physicians, neither could be healed of any, came behind "him" ("Jesus") and touched the border of his garment, and immediately her issue of blood stanched. Lu. viii. 43, 44.

She (the woman who had an issue of blood) said, If I may touch but his clothes I shall be whole. Mar. v. 28. And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment, and as many as touched him were made whole. Mar. vi. 56. And he (Jesus) cometh to Bethsaida, and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him. Mar. viii. 22. (And God wrought special miracles by the hand of Peter) insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. Ac. v. 15. So that from his (Paul's) body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them. Ac. xix. 12.

Hem of his garment.] See chap. xiv. 36. They (the Scribes and Pharisees) make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, &c. Mat. xxiii. 5. Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments, throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a riband of blue. And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the Lord, and do them. Nu. xv. 38, 39. Thou shalt make three fringes upon the four quarters of thy vesture, wherewith thou coverest thyself. De. xxii. 12. (The woman) came behind him and touched the border of

his garment, and immediately her issue of blood was stanched. Lu. viii. 44.

21 If I may but touch his garment.] See com. on verse 20. And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter, and they that were with him, said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me, for I per

22 garment, I shall be whole. But Jesus turned him about, and

when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole 23 from that hour. And when Jesus came into the ruler's house, 24 and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise, He said

ceive that virtue is gone out of me. And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. Lu. viii. 45-47.

22 Daughter, be of good comfort.] See verse 2, and com. And he (Jesus) said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague. Mar. v. 34. Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace. Lu. viii. 48.

Thy faith hath made thee whole.] Then touched he "their" (the “two blind men's") eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you! Mat. ix. 29. And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. Mar. x. 52. And he said to the woman (who anointed his feet, &c.), Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace! Lu. vii. 50. Arise (said Jesus to the leper), go thy way, thy faith hath made thee whole. Lu. xvii. 19. Receive thy sight (said Jesus to the blind man of Jericho); thy faith hath saved thee. Lu. xviii. 42. The "same" (the "impotent man of Lystra") heard Paul speak, who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed, said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked. Ac. xiv. 9, 10. Unto us (Gentiles) was the Gospel preached, as well as unto them (the Jews), but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. He. iv. 2.

From that hour.] And Jesus rebuked the devil, and he departed out of him, and the child was cured from that very hour. Mat. xvii. 18. "The father" ("the nobleman" whose son was a dying) knew that it was at the same hour (the seventh hour when he began to amend) in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth, and himself believed, and his whole house. John iv. 53. These men are the servants of the most high God (said the damsel possessed with a spirit of divination), which shew us the way of salvation. this did she many days. But Paul being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee, in the name of Jesus Christ, to come out of her; and he came out the same hour. Ac. xvi. 17, 18.

And

23 Into the ruler's house.] See verses 18, 19. While he (Jesus) yet spake (to the woman who touched his clothes and was healed), there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house

certain which said, Thy daughter is dead; why troublest thou the Master any further. As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe; and he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James; and he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. Mar. v. 35~~ 38. He (Jesus) said unto her (that was healed of her infirmity), Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace. While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master. But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole; and when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden. Lu. viii. 48-51.

The minstrels.] Whereunto shall I liken this generation (said Jesus)? it is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented. Mat. xi. 16, 17. Jeremiah lamented for Josiah, and all the singing men, and the singing women spake of Josiah in their lamentations to this day, and made them an ordinance in Israel. And behold they are written in the Lamentations. 2 Ch. xxxv. 25. Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Consider ye, and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and send for cunning women, that they may come, and let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters. For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion, How are we spoiled! we are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because our dwellings have cast us out. Yet, hear the word of the Lord, O ye women! and let your ear receive the word of his mouth, and teach your daughters wailing, and every one her neighbour lamentation for death is come up into our windows, and is entered into our palaces, to cut off the children from without, and the young men from the streets. Je. ix. 17-21. And he (Jesus) cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. And when he was come in, he saith unto them,

unto them, Give place: for the And they laughed him to scorn.

』,

Why make ye this ado, and weep? The damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying. Mar. v. 38-40. Whereunto shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like? They are like unto children sitting in the market-place, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not wept. Lu. vii. 31, 32. When "he" ("Peter") was come (to Lydda), they brought him into the upper chamber, and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them. Ac. ix. 39.

maid is not dead, but sleepeth. But when the people were put 25

Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death; but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. John xi. 4. 11, 12, 13.

And they laughed him to scorn.] And they that passed by (as Jesus hung upon the cross) reviled him, wagging their heads, and saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the Scribes and elders, said, He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the king of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. He trusted in God; let him deliver him now if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. Mat. xxvii. 39-43. But I am (said David in the character of the Messiah) a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. All they that see me laugh me to scorn, they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the Lord, that he would deliver him. Let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him." Ps. xxii. 6, 7, 8. Thus saith the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the Lord that is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose thee. Is. xlix. 7. He is despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised and we esteemed him not. Is. liii. 3.

24 Give place.] And she (the widow of Zarephath) said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? Art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son? And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed. And he cried unto the Lord, and said, O Lord my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn by slaying her son? And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the Lord, and said, O Lord my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again. And the Lord heard the voice of Elijah, and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: 25 The people were put forth.] When and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth. And the Elisha was come into the house (of the Shuwoman said to Elijah, Now by this I know nammite woman), behold, the child (of the that thou art a man of God, and that the woman) was dead, and laid upon his bed; he word of the Lord in thy mouth is truth. 1 went in therefore, and shut the door upon Ki. xvii. 18–24. Peter put them all forth, them twain, and prayed unto the Lord. And and kneeled down and prayed; and turning he went up and lay upon the child, and put him to the body, said, Tabitha arise. And his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon she opened her eyes, and when she saw his eyes, and his hands upon his hands, and Peter she sat up. Ac. ix. 40. And Paul he stretched himself upon the child, and the went down and fell on "him" ("Euty- flesh of the child waxed warm. Then he chus" who while Paul was preaching sunk returned and walked in the house to and fro, down with sleep, and falling down from the and went up, and stretched himself upon him: third loft was taken up dead), and em- and the child sneezed seven times, and the bracing him, said, Trouble not yourselves, for child opened his eyes. And he called Gehis life is in him. Ac. xx. 10. hazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her, and when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son. 2 Ki. iv. 32-36. Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down and prayed; and turning him to the body (of Dorcas), said, Tabitha arise; and she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up. And he gave her his hand,

Not dead.] When Jesus heard "that" ("that Lazarus was sick"), he said, This sickness is not unto death; but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. After that he saith unto "them" (“his disciples"), our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go that I make awake him out of sleep.

forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose. 26 And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land. And when 27 Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and 28 saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us. And when he was

and lifted her up; and when he had called the saints and widows he presented her alive, Ac. ix. 40, 41.

And took her by the hand.] And he (Jesus) came and took "her" ("Simon's wife's mother") by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them. Mar. i. 31. And he (Jesus) took the damsel (the ruler's daughter) by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi, which is, being interpreted, Damsel (I say unto thee), arise. Mar. v. 41. And "he" ("Jesus") took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought. And he looked up and said, I see men, as trees, walking. Mar. viii. 23, 24. Jesus took him (that had the dumb spirit) by the hand, and lifted him up, and he arose. Mar. ix. 27. He (Jesus) put them all out, and took her (the ruler's daughter) by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise, and her spirit came again, and she arose straightway. Lu. viii. 54.

26 The fame hereof.] See chap. iv. 24. At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, and said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist. He is risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. Mat. xiv. 1, 2. But "he" ("the leper that was healed") went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places; and they came to him from every quarter. Mar. i. 45. And king Herod heard of him (for his name was spread abroad): and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. Mar. vi. 14. The king (Agrippa) knoweth of these things (that Christ should suffer, &c. said Paul), before whom also I speak freely; for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him, for this thing was not done in a corner. Ac. xxvi. 26.

27 Two blind men followed him.] The blind receive their sight (said Jesus to John's disciples), and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the Gospel preached unto them. Mat. xi. 5. Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind and dumb; and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. Mat. xii. 22. And behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that

Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David. Mat. xx. 30. See com. on verse 25. for Mar. viii. 22, 23, 24. And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples, and a great number of people, blind Bartimeus, the son of Timeus, sat by the highway side begging. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me. And many charged, him that he should hold his peace. But he cried the more, a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me. And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And Jesus said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? the blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight. And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way, thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way. Mar. x. 46-52. In the same hour he cured many of their infirmities, and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight. Lu. vii. 21. And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, and said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, which is by interpretation, Sent. He went his way, therefore, and washed, and came seeing. John ix. 1, 6, 7. See chap. xx. 30.

Thou Son of David.] See chap. i. 1. All the people were amazed (at Christ's healing the blind and dumb man), and said, Is not this the Son of David? Mat. xii. 23. And behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David. And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace; but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David. Mat. xx. 30, 31. And the multitudes that went before, and that followed (Jesus as he rode into Jerusalem upon an ass), cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest. And when the chief priests and Scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David, they were sore displeased. Mat. xxi. 9. 15. Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me (said the blind man of Jericho to Jesus). Mar. x. 47, 48. Blessed be the kingdom of our father

and Jesus saith

come into the house, the blind men came to him unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. Then touched he their eyes, saying, According 29 to your faith be it unto you. And their eyes were opened; and 30 Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it. But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all 31 that country. As they went out, behold, they brought to him a 32

David, that cometh in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest. Mar. xi. 10. And Jesus said while he taught in the temple, How say the Scribes that Christ is the Son of David? For David himself said, By the Holy Ghost, the Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand till I make thine enemies thy footstool. David therefore himself calleth him Lord, and whence is he then his son? Mar. xii. 35, 36, 37. And he (the blind man of Jericho) cried, saying, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me! Lu. xviii. 38, 39. How say they that Christ is David's son? And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand till I make thine enemies thy footstool. David therefore calleth him Lord; how is he then his son ? Lu. XX. 41-44. I could wish (said Paul), that myself were accursed from Christ, for my brethren, who are Israelites, whose are the fathers, and of whom, as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, blessed for ever. Amen. Ro. ix. 3. 5.

Have mercy on us.] Lord, have mercy on my son (said the father of the lunatick), for he is lunatick, and sore vexed, for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. Mat. xvii. 15. Ofttimes "it" ("the dumb spirit") hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him; but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. Mar. ix. 22. They (the ten lepers) lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. Lu. xvii. 13. See chap. xii. 22.; xvii. 15.

28 Come into the house.] See chap. viii. 14. and com. Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house, and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. Mat. xiii. 36.

Believe ye that I am able to do this?] See verse 22. and chap. viii. 2. and com. Except ye see signs and wonders (said Jesus to the nobleman of Capernaum), ye will not believe. The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down, ere my child die. Jesus saith unto him, Thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way. John iv. 48, 49, 50. Whosoever liveth and believeth in me, shall never die. Believest thou this (said Jesus to Martha the sister of Lazarus)? Said I not unto thee, that,

if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? John xi. 26. 40.

29 Touched he their eyes.] Jesus had compassion on them (the two blind men), and touched their eyes, and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him. Mat. xx. 34.

According to your faith, &c.] Lord (said the centurion of Capernaum), my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way, and as thou hast believed so be it done unto thee; and his servant was healed in the self same hour. Mat. viii. 6, 7. 13. O woman (of Canaan), great is thy faith. Be it unto thee even as thou wilt; and her daughter was made whole from that very hour. Mat. xv. 28. Go thy way (said Jesus to the blind man of Jericho), thy faith hath made thee whole; and immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way. Mar. x. 52.

30 Their eyes were opened.] The Lord openeth the eyes of the blind; the Lord raiseth them that are bowed down; the Lord loveth the righteous. Ps. cxlvi. 8. Then (in the flourishing state of Christ's kingdom) the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Is. XXXV. 5. I, the Lord, have called "thee" (" Christ”) in righteousness, to open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prisonhouse. Is. xlii. 7. Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high. Is. lii. 13. And (Jesus) said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam. He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing; then said "they" ("the Pharisees") unto him, what did he to thee? How opened he thine eyes? John ix. 7. 26. See chap. xi. 5.

Straitly charged them.] See chap. viii. 4. And her parents were astonished (that their daughter was restored to life), but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done. Lu. viii. 56.

31 Spread abroad his fame, &c.] "He" ("the leper" to whom Jesus said, See thou say nothing to any man) went out, and he began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter. Mar. i. 44, 45. "He"
