22 that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many

them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God. Mar. x. 23, 24. It is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. Lu. xviii. 25. Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. John iii. 5. And when they (Paul and Barnabas) had preached the Gospel to that city (Derbe) and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and to Antioch, confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. Ac. xiv. 21, 22. We which have believed do enter into rest. Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein; and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest. He. iv. 3. 6. 11.

That doeth the will, &c.] Whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. Mat. xii. 50. A certain man had two sons (said Jesus), and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to-day in my vineyard; and he answered and said, I will not, but afterward he repented and went.

And he came to the second, and said likewise; and he answered and said, I go sir, and went not; Whether of them twain did the will of his Father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, that the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. Mat. xxi. 2831. Whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and my mother. Mar. iii. 35. Blessed are they that hear the word of God and keep it. Lu. xi. 28. And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son and believeth on him may have everlasting life, and I will raise him up at the last day. John vi. 40. If any man will do his will he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. John vii. 17. Be not conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Ro. xii. 2. Servants be obedient, not with eye service, as men-pleasers, but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. Ep. vi. 6. Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God. Col. iv. 12. This is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication; that every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour.

1 Th. iv. 3, 4. Not in the lust of

concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God; wherefore comfort one another with these words. 1 Th. iv. 5. 18. Now the God of peace make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever, Amen. He. xiii. 21. For so is the will of God, that with well-doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men. 1 Pe. ii. 15. He that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; that he should no longer live the rest of his time in the flesh, to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. 1 Pe. iv. 2. Beloved, if our heart condema us not, then have we confidence toward God, and whatsoever we ask we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight, and this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another as he gave us commandAnd he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him and he in him, and hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. 1 John iii. 21-24. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. Re. xxii. 14.

My Father which is in heaven.] Whosoever shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven. Mat. x. 32, 33. Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed “it” (kis “confession of Christ”) unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. Mat. xvi. 17. Take heed (said Jesus) that ye despise not one of these "little ones” (“his disciples"), for I say unto you, that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. Again, I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. "So" likewise (as his Lord was wroth against his servant who had not mercy) shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses. Mat. xviii. 10. 19. 35. And he (Jesus) went away a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. And he cometh unto the disciples and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What! could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. He went away again the second time, and prayed,

will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto 23

saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me except I drink it, thy will be done! Mat. xxvi, 39-42. My Father (said Jesus) worketh hitherto, and I work. John v. 17. Many of " them" (the "Jews") said, He (Jesus) hath a devil. If thou be the Christ tell us plainly; Jesus answereth them, The works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me. My sheep hear my voice and I know them, and they follow me, and I give unto them eternal life. My Father which gave them me is greater than all; and none is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one. John x. 20. 27-30. If ye had known me (said Jesus), ye should have known my Father also, and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. John xiv. 7. He that hateth me hateth my Father also. John xv. 23. He that overcometh and keepeth my works unto the end shall rule them (the nations) with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers; even as I received of my Father. Re. ii. 27. He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment, and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. Re. iii. 5.

22 To me in that day.] See verse 21, and Of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. Mat. xxiv. 36. The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day. The loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low; and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day. Is. ii. 11. 17. They (that feared the Lord) shall be mine, said the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. Then shall ye return and discern between the righteous, and the wicked; between him that serveth God, and him that serveth him not. Mal. iii. 17, 18. I say unto you (said Jesus), That it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city (which receives not the disciples). Lu. x. 12. But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. 1 Th. v. 4. The Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day. 2 Th. i. 10. I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the

ministry: this charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare. 1 Ti. i. 12. 18. Godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. 1 Ti. iv. 8.

Have we not prophesied, &c.] These twelve (apostles) Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: but go ye rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils; freely ye have received, freely give. Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses. Mat. x. 5-9. He hath said, which heard the words of God, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open. Nu. xxiv. 4. They (the people of Israel) slew the kings of Midian, besides the rest of them that were slain, namely, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian. Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword. Nu. xxxi. 8. And Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made him horns of iron, and he said, Thus saith the Lord, With these shalt thou push the Syrians, until thou have consumed them. And all the prophets prophesied so, saying, Go up to Ramoth and prosper; for the Lord shall deliver it into the king's (Ahab's) hand. And the messenger that was gone to call Micaiah, spake unto him, saying, Behold now, the words of the prophets declare good unto the king with one mouth: let thy word, I pray thee, be like the word of one of them, and speak that which is good. 1 Ki. xxii. 11-13. I have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria; they prophesied in Baal, and caused my people Israel to err; I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing; they commit adultery and walk in lies; they strengthen also the hands of evil-doers, that none doth return from his wickedness, they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah. Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts concerning the prophets, Behold I will feed them with wormwood, and make them drink the water of gall; for from the prophets of Jerusalem is profaneness gone forth into all the land, &c. Je. xxiii. 13-15. Then shall ye begin to say (said Jesus), We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets, but he shall say, I tell you I know you not whence ye are, Depart from me all ye workers of iniquity. Lu. xiii. 26, 27. This spake "he" ("Caiaphas" saying,

them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. 24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth

that one man should die for the people) not of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation. John xi. 51. Certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. And there were seven sons of one Sceva a Jew, and chief of the priests which did so. And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are ye? Ac. xix. 13-15. Though I speak with the tongues of men and angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal; and though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 1 Co. xiii. 1, 2. It is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, if they shall fall away, to renew them unto repentance, seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to open shame. He. vi. 4-6.

I am

23 I never knew you, &c.] Verily I say unto you, I know you not (said the bridegroom to the foolish virgins). Mat. xxv. 12. the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. My sheep hear my voice and I know them, and they follow me; and I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any pluck them out of my Father's hand; I and my Father are one. John x. 27-30. The foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. 2 Ti. ii. 19.

Depart from me, ye that work iniquity.] Depart from me ye cursed (saith the King to those on his left hand in the day of judgment) into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. Mat. xxv. 41. The foolish shall not stand in thy sight; thou hatest all workers of iniquity. Ps. v. 5. Depart from me all ye workers of iniquity. Ps. vi. 8. When once the master of the house is risen up, and has shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are: then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. But he shall say, I tell you I know you not whence ye are; depart from me all ye workers of iniquity. Lu. xiii. 25-27. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and

murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. Re. xxii. 15.

24 Whosoever heareth these sayings, &c.] See verses 7, 8, 13. 14. See Mat. v. 3. 28— 32. and com.; chap. vi. 14, 15. 19. and com. Whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. Mat. xii. 50. Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like. He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock, and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded upon a rock. But he that heareth and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth, against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great. Lu. vi. 47—49. Blessed are they that hear the word and keep it. Lu. xi. 28. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. John xiii. 17. If ye love me (said Jesus), keep my commandments. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words, and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings. John xiv. 15. 22-24. If ye keep my commandments ye shall abide in my love. Even as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love; ye are my friends if ye do whatsoever I command you. John xv. 10. 14. Despisest thou the riches of "his" ("God's") goodness, who will render to every man according to his deeds? them, who by patient continuance in welldoing, seek for glory, and honour, and immortality, eternal life. But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness: indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish upon every soul of man that doeth evil. Ro. ii. 6-9. For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing nor uncircumcision, but faith which worketh by love. Ye did run well, who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? Ga. v. 6, 7. Be not deceived, God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh, shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit, shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. Ga. vi. 7, 8. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness, and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the ingrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of

them, I will liken him untó a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and 25

the word and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any man be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass; for he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was; but whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this; to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. Ja. i. 21-27. Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone; yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well; the devils also believe and tremble; but wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead. For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. Ja. ii. 17-26. Hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 1 John ii. 3. Whatsoever we ask we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment, that we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him; and hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. John iii. 22-24. This is the love of God, that we keep his commandments, and his commandments are not grievous. For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God. 1 John v. 3-5. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. Re. xxii. 14, 15.

A wise man.] The fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding. Job xxviii. 28. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all they that do his commandments, his praise endureth for ever. Ps. cxi. 10. I have more understanding than all

Pr.

my teachers, for thy testimonies (O God) are my meditation; the entrance of thy words giveth light, it giveth understanding to the simple. Ps. cxix. 99. 130. The wise in heart will receive commandments. Pr. x. 8. The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way, but the folly of fools is deceit. xiv. 8. Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? Let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. Ja. iii. 13—18.

Which built his house upon a rock.] According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise master builder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereupon, for other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 1 Co. iii. 10, 11.

25 The rain descended, &c.] Say unto them (the prophets) which daub "it" ("the wall") with untempered mortar, that it shall fall, there shall be an overflowing shower; and ye, O great hailstones, shall fall; and a stormy wind shall rend it. Lo! when the wall is fallen, shall it not be said unto you, Where is the daubing wherewith ye have daubed it? Therefore thus saith the Lord God, I will even rend it with a stormy wind in my fury; and there shall be an overflowing shower in mine anger, and great hailstones in my fury to consume it. I will accomplish my wrath upon the wall and upon them that have daubed it with untempered mortar, and will say unto you, The wall is no more; neither they that daubed it, to wit, the prophets of Israel, which prophesy concerning Jerusalem, and which see visions of peace for her, and there is no peace saith the Lord. Ex. xiii. 11-16. "He" ("the Messiah") shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness. Mal. iii. 3. They (Paul and Barnabas) returned again to Lystra, &c. confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith; and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. xiv. 22. Every man's work shall be made manifest, for the day shall declare it because

the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it 26 was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a 27 foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat

it shall be revealed by fire, and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burnt, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as by fire. 1 Co. iii. 13-15. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation, for when he is tried he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Ja. i. 12. Ye are in heaviness through many temptations, that the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise, and honour, and glory, at the appearing of Jesus Christ. 1 Pe. i. 6, 7.

For it was founded upon a rock.] Thou art Peter (said Jesus to Simon), and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Mat. xvi. 18. Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God, They shall still bring forth fruit in old age. They shall be fat and flourishing, to shew that the Lord is upright; he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him. Ps. xcii. 1315. They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth fast for ever. As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the Lord is round about his people from henceforth even for ever. Ps. cxxv. 1, 2. I bow my knees unto the Father, that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith, that ye being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend the love of Christ which passeth knowledge. Eph. iii. 17. As ye have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him, rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith. Col. ii. 6, 7. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath begotten us again to an inheritance, incorruptible and undefiled, that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you. Who are kept by the power of God, through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Pe. i. 3. 5. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us; but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. 1 John ii. 19.

26 And doeth them not.] I said indeed (saith the Lord to Eli the priest), that thy house and the house of thy father should walk before me for ever; but now the Lord saith, Be it far from me, for them that honour me,

I will honour; and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed. 1 Sa. ii. 30. Every wise woman buildeth her house; but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands. Pr. xiv. 1. The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken; lo, they have rejected the word of the Lord, and what wisdom is in them? Je. viii. 9. He that heareth and doeth not, is like a man that, without a foundation, built an house upon the earth, against which the stream did beat violently, and the ruin of that house was great. La. vi. 49. Faith without works is dead. Ja ii. 20.

27 And the rain descended, &c.] When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places seeking rest and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out, and when he is come he findeth it empty, swept and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there, and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Mat. xii. 43-45. When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. But he that received seed into stony places, the same is he, that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while, for when tribulation or persecution ariseth, because of the word, by and by, he is offended. He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. Mat. xiii. 19-22. They have seduced my people, saying, Peace, and there was no peace; and one built up a wall, and lo, others daubed it with untempered mortar, to wit, the prophets of Israel, which prophesy concerning Jerusalem, and which see visions of peace for her, and there is no peace, saith the Lord God. Ez. xiii. 10. 16. Every man's work shall be made manifest; for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. 1 Co.iii. 3. If we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, but a certain looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses' law died without mercy, under
