(1) What is generally understood by Fornication, is most exprefly forbidden in the holy Scriptures. See the References under 1 Cor. 6. 18. Dr. Lightfoot is therefore of Opinion, that by Fornication here, is forbidden one or both thefe Things. First, Bigamy or Poligamy, that is, the having two or more Wives. For he obferves, that, in Cafe of the Wife's Barrennefs, it was a common thing among the Jews to take to them another or more Women for Propagation fake; and this is it which God brands with the reproachful Name of Whoredom, Hof. 4. 10. Whatever elfe, fays he, is understood by this Word, I would certainly understand this, namely, That the Apoftles prefcribed against Poligamy, a thing esteemed indifferent amongst the Jews, (as Fornication was amongst the Gentiles) and therefore not unfitly mention'd here amongst things indifferent: See the Note on 1 Cor. 7.3 Secondly, Marrying within the prohibited Degrees is here forbidden.

But neither Titus, who was with me being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcifed. † See Gal. 5. 2. Behold, I Paul fay unto you, that if ye be circumcifed, Chrift fhall profit you nothing.

(1) It is very plain from feveral Paffages in the New-Teftament, particularly the Ep file to the Galatians, That the whole Ceremonial Law was abolifhed by the Coming and Death of Chrift. But this notwithstanding, St. Paul, that he might gain the Jews to the Chriftian Religion, complied with them in fome things. For this Reafon he purified himself in the Temple, and circumcifed Timot by; for he being a few by the Mother's fide, it was not unlawful to do it. The Reafon why he was not circumcifed in his Childhood was, becaufe his Father was a Greek or Gentile, and fo probably would not confent thereunto. But when the Perfons converted were Gentiles, the Apoftles would not comply with the Jews in this matter, as is manifeft from his refufing to circumcife Titus, Gal. 2. 3.′′ and from his Declaration, Gal. 5. 2. that if they were circumcifed, in or der to their being juftified and faved thereby, Christ would profit them mathing.
