(1) Righteous and Good Men are in the holy Scriptures compared to a green flourishing Tree, whofe Leaves do not wither, Pial. 1. 3. and the Wicked and Ungodly, to a barren and dry Tree, fit only for the Fire. Thus when God by Ezekiel, Chap. 20. 47. threatens that he would kin dle a Fire which should devour every green Tree, and every dry Tree, the Meaning is, he would cut off the Righteous and the Wicked. The Senfe therefore of these Words is, If fuch Afflictions befal me, who have not deferv d them, what Punishments will God bring upon the Wicked, who are the Inftruments of them, and are fitted for Deftruction, as dry Wood is for the Fire ?

(1) To reconcile this with St. Matthew, who fpeaks as if both the Thieves reviled our Lord, let it be obferved, that Writers, both facred. and prophane, frequently ufe the plural Number for the fingular. Thus, What is faid to be written in the Prophets, is only written in one of them; and what is faid to be fpoken by the Difciples, was only faid by one of them. Farther, St. Luke writing a fuller Account of this matter, is more particular in relating the Circumftances than St. Matthew, who feems to defign to Record only fo much as would fhew che Fulfilling of the Prophecies, particularly that which fays, He was numbred with the Tranf greffors. Whether this Malefactor had done any thing towards a true Re pentance before he came to Execution or not, is not recorded, and therefore uncertain. But thus much is certain, that his believing in Chrift at this firft Opportunity, bears no refemblance to the late Repentance of Chriftians, who have believed in Chrift, and notwithstanding have all their Lives difobeyed him.
