He that been poffeffed with the D prayed him that he might be (1) That is, the Pit of Hell, the Place prepared for the Devil Angels, to punish them for their Rebellion against God. The D being made fenfible of our Lord's Power, might fear that he woul mediately confign them to thofe Torments they will be fentenced at the Judgment of the great Day; they therefore befeech him they might not be fent thither before that time. Where this P is, it is not material to enquire. Probably it may be fome Place out the Limits of our Earth. And this may poffibly be a Reafon it is ftyled, Mat. 8. 12. Outer [or, outward] Darkness. The Word dred Deep, 2 Cor. 11. 25. is not the fame which is here ufed, but Word which fignifies a deep Place, as the Bottom of the Sea, &c. The postle may there refer to fome Shipwreck which he was tot in Night and a Day together; or to fome deep Prison or Dungeon which he was caft, though it be not exprefly mentioned in Hiftory. turn to thine own house, and fhew how great things God hath done unto thee.
