EPUB

A separate edition of Part II., including a reprint of some selections from Part I., has been published, for the special use of the Infant Classes,—in which each Hymn bears, at its upper right-hand corner, the number, in brackets, of its position in this book, for convenience of reference.

Here, as in other parts of the Selection, those who are familiar with the sacred songs of our Schools and homes, will observe a few alterations and additions,as in Nos. 246 and 274. Such changes have been made only where direct worship could not other wise be offered in using the Hymn-or where, by slightly modifying its language, some popular composi tion of earlier days, might be made better to harmonize with the Scriptures, or to satisfy more fully the requirements of the present time.

HYMNS FOR THE JUNIOR CLASSES.

SHELLY.

LORD, a little band, and lowly,

We are come to sing to Thee; Thou art great, and high, and holy, O how solemn we should be!

2 Fill our hearts with thoughts of Jesus,
And of heaven, where He is gone;
And let nothing ever please us,
He would grieve to look upon.

3 For, we know, the Lord of Glory
Always sees what children do,
And is writing now the story
Of our thoughts, and actions too.

4 Let our sins be all forgiven;

Make us fear whate'er is wrong; Lead us on our way to heaven, There to sing a nobler song.

Psalm cxix. 72.

L.M.

THIS is a precious book indeed!

TAYLOR.*

Happy the child who loves to read! 'Tis God's own word, which He has given To show our souls the way to heaven.

2 It tells us how the world was made,
And how good men the Lord obeyed;
Here His commands are written too,
To teach us what we ought to do.

3 It bids us all from sin to fly,

Because our souls can never die ;
Points to that world where angels dwell,
And warns us to escape from hell.

4 But, what is more than all beside,
The Bible tells us Jesus died;
This is its best, its chief intent,
To lead poor sinners to repent.

5 Then teach us children, blessed Lord,
To read and keep Thy holy word,—
Repent, and have our sins forgiven,
Believe, and follow Christ to heaven.

[blocks in formation]

AVE you read the wondrous story
Of the Saviour's life and death,—
How He left His throne of glory,
And for us resigned His breath?

2 May a helpless child approach Him,
And His tender pity crave;

Will it not be deemed encroaching,-
Will He such a sinner save?

3 Yes, for, with compassion beaming
From His kind and tender eye,
While with love His words are teeming,
Hear this blessed Saviour cry,—

4 "Come and welcome! 'tis my pleasure
Little children to receive;

Those who seek Me find a treasure
Which this world can never give."

5 Lord, I come,-and would surrender
All I am, and have, to Thee,-

While I

cry,
What shall I render
To the Lord for calling me?"

1 John iv. 9.

ERE'S a message of love,
Come down from above,

To invite little children to heaven!
In God's blessed book,
Poor sinners may look,

And see how all sin is forgiven.

2

For there they may read
How Jesus did bleed,

And die for His dear little ones;

P.M.

How clean He first makes them,
And afterwards takes them

To be His own daughters and sons.

[blocks in formation]

He calls them on high,

To be with Him in heaven above;

For, so kind is His heart,

That He never will part

From a child that has tasted His love.

4

And oh, what delight,

In heaven so bright,

To see the dear Saviour's face;

On His beauty to gaze,

And sing to His praise,

For ever, in that happy place!

Psalm xcix. 3.

WATTS.

H Who reigns above the sky:

OW glorious is our heavenly King!

How shall a child presume to sing
His dreadful majesty?

2 How great His power is, none can tell,
Nor think how large His grace,-
Not men below, nor saints that dwell
On high, before His face.
