Now the first Adam, filled with joy,

Hails his long-promised seed;

Who healed the breach that sin had made, And broke the serpent's head.

There Abraham's faith in sight is lost,

That Son, so long foretold,
In whom all nations of the world
Are blest, his eyes behold.

Moses triumphant now exclaims, "The law by me was given,

But grace and truth, through Jesus Christ, Are now revealed from heaven."

David acknowledges his Son

And Lord exalted now

To God's right hand, till all his foes

Beneath his footstool bow.

With holy joy Isaiah asks,

Who comes from Edom, who?

With garments stained from Bozrah, who Comes to his covenant true?

He glorious in his raiment shines,
He speaks in righteousness;
Travelling in greatness of his strength,
All powerful to bless.

Yes, Jeremiah cries-" "Tis He,
'Tis our Almighty King,

The Lord our righteousness, who shall
To Israel safety bring."

The Angel of the covenant
Now Malachi descries,

He sees the Sun of righteoussness
With healing influence rise.

Thus all the ransomed souls above
Rejoice with one accord,
Angels and saints harmonious join
To praise their rising Lord.

Children of Zion, join the song,
And bless your Saviour's name ;
The great and Holy One who dwells
In midst of thee proclaim.

SUM

The First and Last Care.

up at night what thou hast done by day; And in the morning what thou hast to do; Dress and undress thy soul: mark the decay

And growth of it: if, with thy watch, that too Be down, then wind up both: since we shall be Most surely judged, make thy accounts agree.

Peace.

"WHILE to Bethl'em we are going, Tell me now, to cheer the road, Tell me why this lonely infant Quitted his divine abode ?" "From that world to bring to this, Peace, which, of all earthly blisses, Is the brightest, purest bliss."

"Wherefore from his throne exalted, Came he on this earth to dwellAll his pomp a humble manger, All his court a narrow cell?" "From that world to bring to this, Peace, which, of all earthly blisses, Is the brightest, purest bliss."

Why did he, the Lord eternal, Mortal pilgrim deign to be, He who fashion'd for his glory Boundless immortality ?"

66 From that world to bring to this, Peace, which, of all earth blisses, Is the brightest, purest bliss."

Well then! let us haste to Bethl'em,
Thither let us haste and rest:

For of all heaven's gifts, the sweetest
Sure is peace-the sweetest, best.

The Seed Sown.

OH God! by whom the seed is given,
By whom the harvest blest;

Whose word, like manna shower'd from heaven,
Is planted in our breast;

Preserve it from the passing feet,

And plunderers of the air; The sultry sun's intenser heat, And weeds of worldly care!

Though buried deep or thinly strewn,
Do thou thy grace supply;

The hope in earthly furrows sown
Shall ripen in the sky!

Waters of Marah.

By Marah's stream of bitterness,
When Moses stood and cried,
Jehovah heard his fervent prayer,
And instant help supplied:
The prophet sought the precious tree
With prompt obedient feet;
'Twas cast into the fount, and made
The bitter waters sweet.

Whene'er affliction o'er thee sheds

Its influence malign,

Then, sufferer, be the prophet's prayer
And prompt obedience thine:
"Tis but a Marah's fount ordain'd
Thy faith in God to prove,
And prayer and resignation shall
Its bitterness remove.
