Genefis 8th chapter. And Noah went forth, out of the ark, and his fons, and his wife, and his fons wives with him; every beaft, every creeping thing, and every fowl; and Noah builded an altar unto the Lord, and took of every clean beat, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt-offerings on the altar.

Job, who is generally fuppofed was a cotemporary with Mofes, your law-giver, and that he was the author of his life, entered it into the fcriptures as a model of perfection. This man, as Noah, Enoch, and Abel (in the book of Genefis) were Gentiles, examples of virtue, and peculiar favourites of their God, as the fcripture witneiles, to which I refer you. I will only fay a few words out of the Life of Job. Job ift chapter. There was a man in the land of Us, whose name was Job, and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and avoided evil. He had feven fons and three daughters, and his fons feasted in their houses, each one his day. And when the days of their feafting were over, Job sent and fanctified them, and rofe up early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to their number: for Job faid, "It inay be that my fons have finned." Thus did Job continually. And the Lord faid, "here is none like him on the earth, a perfect and upright man. In Job you will find the perfect christian.

Redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day on the earth. And though worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall 1 fee God, whom I fhall fee for myfelf, and my eyes fhall behold, and not another.".

The moit zealous chriftian cannot express. himself, or enforce his fentiments with greater energy, on the Divine and Human nature of Chrift. Job lived 1500 years prior to the time marked for the birth of Chrift. He first affirmed, that the Divine nature lived, and that in the latter day (which was the æra or epoch marked for the manifeftation and reign of the Meffiah, this laft age) he should stand or manifeft himself on earth in his human nature, as was promised at the fall of man, that the feed of the woman fhould crush the ferpent's head, that is, defeat the intrigues of Satan, and reftore man to the favour of his God, which Satan had robbed him of. The refurrection or revival of the flesh was well known to Job, as he declares. And though worms destroy this body, yet, in my flefh fhall I fee God. He expoftulates with his friends for cenfuring his complaints caused by exceffive pain, from which we draw these fundamental principles of chriftianity, known from the fall of man and until the end of the world, requifite and neceffary for obtaining falvation, Faith and Hope in Chrift, coupled with a holy, virtuous, and perfect life.

But you should fay, why perfecute we him, feeing the root of the matter is found in his heart. Be ye afraid of the fword; for wrath caufeth the punishment of the fword, that you

may know there is a judgment. I will expatiate in few words on the meeting, and bring into contact the characters of Melchifedech, king of Salem, who was an uncircumcised prieft, a Gentile, and Ifrael's great progenitor, who received the promife. Their meeting was on Abram's return from the battle of the kings victorious. Genefis 14th chapter. And Melchifedech brought forth bread and wine; and he was the priest of the moft High God. And he bleffed him and faid, Bleffed be Abram of the moft High God, poffeffor of heaven and earth, and bleffed be the moft High God, which hath delivered thy enemies into thy hands, and he gave him tithes of all.

Your great legiflator places before us two diftinguished characters, fublime and fingularly exalted, characterifing the Jewish and chriftian covenants. Abram reprefents and exhibits bloody offerings of beafts and birds, according to the law, as aforefaid. Melchifedech, bread and wine, representing the chriftian facrifice of the Mafs. The chriftian facrifice the Royal prophet fet forth in his Pfaim 1000 years prior to the inftitution. This Pfalm confirms the exalted ftate human nature would be entitled in the perlon of Chrift and completion of the promise, that in Abram's feed all nations fhould be bleffed. Pfalm 110. The Lord faid unto my Lord, "Sit thou on my Right-hand, until I make thy enemies thy footftool. The Lord fhal fend the rod of thy strength out of Zion rule thou in the midst of thy enemies. Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power,

power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou haft the dew of thy youth. The Lord hath fworn, and will not repent. Thou art a prieft for ever after the order of Melchifedech. The I ord at thy Right-hand fhail ftrike through kings in the day of his wrath. He fhall judge among the heathens he fhall fill the places with the dead bodies: he fhall wound the heads over many countries he fhall drink of the brook in the way therefore fhall he lift up the head.

The firft, or Jewish covenant, represented by their progenitor Abram, was limited or confined betwixt the river of Egypt and the Euphrates, an extent infignificant. The fecond, or covenant of Chrift, reprefented by Melchifedech, unlimited and univerfal throughout the world, which general amnefty of grace without distinction to either Jew or Gentile takes in, according to the firft inftitution or promife, the whole race of Adam, and in extent the whole world. The Jewish covenant, under Mofes, was confined to one Tabernacle, and from the reign of Solomon one Temple; both Tabernacle and Temple have had no being fince forty years from the death of the Meffiah, according to the prophets, which, to your knowledge, is now near eighteen centuries. And to the world I appeal for the confirmation and evidence of fcripture, and truth of my affertion, relating to propagation and uninterrupted perpetuity of the fecond or covenant of Chrift, from her eftablishment to our prefent æra, 1752 years, which verify the prophecy of Malachi, abolish

ing and repealing the old law, inftituting, confirming and establishing the new covenant of Chrift. Malachi 1ft chapter. I have no pleafure in you, faith the Lord of Hofts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand. For, from the rifing of the fun even unto the going down of the fame, my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incenfe thall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering; for my name fhall be great among the heathens, faith the Lord of Hofts.

To return to our two great types of the Jewish and chriftian covenants, Abram fubmits obedience, and pays tithes to his fuperior. Melchifedech accepts his homage and as fuperior bleffes him. Contraft thefe excellencies and most eminent characters, lay afide they being types of the two covenants (and Abram represented of the inferior) you will, by the rules of rectitude, decide Abram fuperior, having the privilege of being fingled by the Deity, in preference, from the whole mafs of the race of Adam, to be the great ancestor of the world's Redeemer, and father of the Elect of God. He was a victorious prince, a man in years, of an unfhaken integrity, rich in all things divine and human, worthy to be filed the friend of God. He was appointed by God to offer facrifice to his adorable Majefty; he was moft high in the favour of his God, and no man more exalted in the cfteem of men. The kingdom of Melchifedech God had included in his gift to Abram's children, which was Jerufalem and country adjacent. The fcriptures through
