head to Jefus Chrift, and then charging him with treachery and falfehod, which falls alfo and deftroys our fcriptures and religion. By this falfe principle you have drove many into defpair, fome of whom have put an end to themselves, others have quitted all religion, relying on your fantaftical and incoherent clamours and blafphemies againft the fcriptures, have taken it for a truth that all is prieftcraft and deception, and that there is no revealed religion, and in one word, that there is no God, as great fools as yourselves. Be for once honeft, withdraw yourselves from Jesus Christ and his church; as you have feparated from the body, feparate from the head alfo, and leave the fcriptures to thofe concerned in them; by this rectitude we fhall each fociety maintain his own right, and give no offence to each other; adhere to this advice in future that the world may enjoy a religious peace and tranquility.

Luth. & Calv. Your advice is not good, by following which we fhould be in a ftate of reprobation.

Mof. The matter is not material.

Luth. & Calv. Our confcience, or inward man, will never permit our Lord to be accused of deception and falfehood.

Mof. You acknowledge him then to be the promifed Meffiah, and that our fcriptures with the chriftians are true?

Luth. & Calv. This is the truth, and whoever, of what men, or body of men, fect, condition, fociety, or religion, that dare, contra

dict or gainfay this truth, let him be excommunicated and accurfed, and be for ever held in derifion and fcorn, and be looked on by all good men as heathens and publicans.

Mof. Your cenfuring the church of Rome has entailed this infamy.

Luth. Calv. This cannot be fo; the proteftant is established on the ruins of the Roman church, who became accurfed for her adulteries.

Mof. Could you prove this convicton the Jews would efteem you as they did Mordecai, for gibbetting Hamon, and make most ample prefents for being the inftruments to detect Jefus Chrift, and reftore them to their former glory and honour, of being the chofen people of God. In this detection you would prove yourselves in the face of the world lovers of truth and enemies to oppreffion, which would heap confufion, infamy, and fhame, on the church of Rome, your moft implacable enemy, and deliver and free yourselves from the excommunication you now lie under, and turn their venom on their own heads. This would be an act of justice.

Luth. & Calv. To restore Judaism would be to join in the crucifixion of our Saviour, Lord, and Judge, in whom we place our hopes, and, through him, life everlasting.

Mof. Schifmatical and heretical factions, both in the Jewish and chriftian covenants, have been raised on this exprefs condition, to destroy the body or trunk, from whence they sprung, or that gave them birth or being. I will, if D 2

you will give me leave, lay before you a few exam ples, but proved abortive with many others which you are not unacquainted with in the chriftian annals, either of you I fuppofe being preachers have ftudied thefe matters many years back.

Luth.& Calv. Upwards of forty or near fifty years, at leaft, as we are turned of feventy.

Mof. It would be unbecoming in me, a ftranger, to fet myfelf for a Doctor of chriftianity (farther than common occurrences, which daily come before us) who am a teacher in Ifrael. I will give you the examples I purpofed of herefy and fchifm, in the Jewish church, beginning with the primitive or in the life-time of our Law-giver. Exod. xxxii. The first of note is the fetting up the calf in the wilderness; and when Aaron faw it, he built an altar before it, and Aaron made proclamation, and faid, to-morrow is a feast to the Lord. And they rofe up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peaceofferings, and the people fat down to eat and drink, and rofe up to play. And when Mofes came down from the Mount, and faw the calf and faw the people naked, for Aaron (in your cafe Luther and Calvin) had made them naked unto their fhame among their enemies; thenMoses stood in the gate of the camp and said, who is on the Lord's fide? and the fons of Levi joined themselves to him. And he said unto them, Thus faith the Lord God of Ifrael, put every man his fword by his fide, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp and flay every man his brother, and every man his compa

nion, and every man his neighbour; and there fell, or put to death about three thousand men, and the Lord plagued the people for this fin.

Lev. c. x. And Nadab and Abitou, the fons of Aaron (a type of Luther and Calvin) took either of them his cenfor, and put fire therein, and put incenfe thereon, and offered ftrange fire before the Lord, which he commandeth them not. And there went out fire from the Lord, and devoured them: and they died before the Lord. Lev. c. 24. And the fon of an Ifraelite woman, whofe father was an Egyptian, went out among the children of Ifrael and, ftrove with an Ifraelite, and the fon of the Ifraelitish woman blafphemed the name of the Lord, and curfed and they brought him to Mofes, and they put him inward, that the mind of the Lord might be fhewed them. And the Lord fpake unto Mofes, Bring him without the camp, and let them that heard him lay their hands upon his head, and let the congregation ftone him. Whofoever curfeth his God fhall bear his fin; and he that blafphemeth the name of the Lord shall be put to death.

Numb. c. xii, And Mariam and Aaron spake against Mofes, because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married; for he had married an Ethiopian woman. And they faid, indeed hath the Lord only spoken, by Mofes, bath he not spoken alfo by us. (type of Luther and Calvin) And the Lord beard it. Now the man Mofes was very much above all the men which were upon the face of the earth. And the Lord fpake unto Mofes, and upto Aaron, and unto Mariam.

Come

Come out you three unto the tabernacles of the congregations, and the three came forth.

And the Lord came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam, and they both came forth. And he faid, hear now my words. If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord will make myself known unto you, in a vifion, and will speak to him in a dream. My fervant Mofes is not fo, who is faithful in all my house, with him will I fpeak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark fpeeches, and the Spirit of the Lord fhall be behold, wherefore then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Mofes. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against them, and he departed. And the cloud departed from off the tabernacle, and behold, Miriam became leprous, white as fnow, and Aaron looked upon Miriam, and behold fhe was leprous. And Aaron faid unto Mofes, Alas, my Lord, I befeech thee lay not the fin upon us wherein we have done foolifly, and wherein we have finned, let her not be as one dead, her flesh is half confumed. And Mofes cried unto the Lord, faying, heal her, O God, I beseech thee. And the Lord faid, let her be but out of the camp feven days, and after let ber be again received; and Miriam was fhut out feven days, when the was again received.

Numb. c. xvi. Kore, Dathan, and Abiram rofe up with 250 princes of the affembly, men of renown, and they gathered themselves against Mofes and Aaron, and faid, you take too much upon you, feeing all the congregation are holy every one of them, and the Lord is among them, why do
