Ad esse conviene l' intenerirsi per le altrui sventure; il far che il pudore pronto e improvviso, ad ogni commozione, ad ogni motto cuopra le vivide guance; ed, ineguali al cimento, alla violenza più lieve ritrarsi, allora più amabili nei loro sospetti; e con tal secreta dolce attrattiva impegnar maggiormente l' uomo a difenderle.

Deh possano i loro sguardi non mirare di tristo che gl'innamorati piangenti! campo per loro più nobile essere in dubbia caccia seguite tra le astuzie e gl'incanti di amore ed anche sfuggite. Muovansi le gentili lor membra in oudeggianti semplici vesti; e, tutte fatte pell' armonia, siano esse sole capaci di fissare i cuori già schiavi, traspirando dai labbri amorosi un seducente gorgheggio. Sappiano insegnare il languore al liuto, col piè strisciato inoltrarsi, sviluppandone il moto con tutta la grazia, e far risaltar la danza intrecciata. Siano abili a ricamare una fronde su la sottil candida tela, a regolare il pennello, a scorrer le armoniche carte, a dare un nuovo e grato sapore ai frutti dell'anno, e raffinar le delizie della Natura. Sappiano far rinascere la loro leggiadria nella lor prole; communicare alla società il gusto il più delicato; procurar che una casa ben regolata sia dell'uomo il contento maggiore; e, con umil saviezza, con accorgimento modesto, con ogni vezzo dell'arte e del disimpegno, sappiano risvegliar la virtù, animare la felicità, e mitigare ogni angoscia dell' umana esistenza. Questo sia delle donne l'ornamento e l' encomio.

atta alle siepi ed agli intricati arboscelli. Per voi la campagna tra i boschi inalza l'estremo suo canto; per voi l'amante, nel silenzio dell'ombra, cerca le noci a mazzi; e, dove sono più grosse nei rami più alti, con agil forza le atterra ai piedi dell' albero, o mature le abbacchia dall' arrendevole scorza; lucida pioggia e di un bel cupo colore, pari alle anella del crin di Melinda ...... Da quelle di razza gentile ridonda una varia dolcezza, preparata dalla man di Natura che il tutto raffina; mista del temprato sole e dell' acqua, della terra e dell' aria in un insieme sempre variante. Tali sono i tesori odoriferi, gli sparsi dovunque mucchi di pomi che cadon frequenti nel freddo maggior della notte, e chè l'anno con ricca vicenda spiega infiniti sul rosseggiante pomario. Un sugo diverso, fresco, squisito e piccante, sta chiuso nei loro gelidi pori; e, ner dissetare le fauci riarse, communica un possente acido al sidro, tuo omogeneo tema, ed ispiratore anche propizio di te, o Philips, cantor di Pomona (71), tu il secondo che osasti cantar nobilmente, con inglese libertà e in verso sciolto, inglese carme.
