His faculties unfolded; pointed out,
Where lavish Nature the directing hand
Of Art demanded; show'd him how to raise
His feeble force by the mechanic powers;
To dig the mineral from the vaulted earth;
On what to turn the piercing rage of fire;
On what the torrent, and the gather'd blast;
Gave the tall ancient forest to his axe;

Taught him to chip the wood, and hew the stone,
Till by degrees the finish'd fabric rose;

Tore from his limbs the blood-polluted fur,
And wrapt them in the woolly vestment warm,
Or bright in glossy silk, and flowing lawn;
With wholesome viands fill'd his table; pour'd
The generous glass around, inspir'd to wake
The life-refining soul of decent wit:
Nor stopp'd at barren bare necessity;
But still advancing bolder, led him on

To pomp, to pleasure, elegance, and grace:

And, breathing high ambition through his soul,
Set science, wisdom, glory, in his view,

Imbandi la di lui mensa di salubri vivande; colmò d'intorno i bicchieri di generoso liquore; e gl' insinuò a ravvivar con decente brio lo spirito, ingentilendo la vita. Ne liitossi l'Industria al semplice e nudo bisogno; ma, ognor progredendo più franca, lo condusse al fasto, al piacere, all' eleganza ed al gusto; e, inspirandogli in cuore nobile ambizione, gli pose innanzi allo sguardo la scienza, la ponderazione, la gloria, e il volle quaggiù signor d'ogni cosa.

Gli uomini allora, unendosi insieme, combinarono i loro naturali talenti e formarono un pubblico governo, che sottopone, prende di mira e guida il tutto al bene di tutti. Per questo adunossi dei cittadini il consesso, numeroso e libero, e che avea un' ingenua rappresentanza dell' Universale. Chose for his grand resort. On either hand,
Like a long wintry forest, groves of masts
Shot up their spires; the bellying sheet between
Possess'd the breezy void; the sooty hulk

Steer'd sluggish on; the splendid barge along
Row'd, regular, to harmony; around,

The boat, light-skimming, stretch'd its oary wings;

While deep the various voice of fervent toil

From bank to bank increas'd; whence ribb'd with oak

To bear the BRITISH THUNDER, black and bold,

The roaring vessel rush'd into the main.

Then too the pillar'd dome, magnific, heav'd Its ample roof; and Luxury within

Pour'd out her glittering stores: the canvas smooth, With glowing life protuberant, to the view

Di qui derivò ogni foggia del viver civile, disposta con ordine, protetta, animata, e di compiuto lavoro. Cumulando il tutto, la società si fe' più popolosa, imponente, culta e felice. La città, nutrice delle arti, elevò con vaga alterezza la testa coronata di torri; e, coll' aggiungere or una strada ed or l'altra, attirossi a migliaia gli aspiranti suoi figli dall'intrecciar che faceano i loro silvestri covili, o dal tendere a forza nell'arco la dura corda di tasso.

Allora il commercio guidò nella pubblica piazza l'affaccendato mercatante, costruì l'ampio magazzino, eresse il robusto argano, ingombre rese le strade di peregrine merci ripiene; e per suo primario centro scelse la corrente tua, o Tamigi, re dei fiumi, esteso, placido, profondo e maestoso. Boschi di antenne alzaron ovunqne le cime loro qual vasta selva d'inverno. La rigonfiante vela si fe' padrona nel mezzo del lieve spirare del vento; l'annerito regolato naviglio lentamente si mosse; remigò a tempo e con armonico accordo la barchetta di sfarzo ; lambendo rapida le acque spiegò intorno la gondola al pari di ali i suoi remi; nel tempo che andava crescendo un cupo-confuso romore di fervente travaglio da spiaggia a spiaggia; d'onde, fiancheggiato di querce per trasportare il fulmin britanno, mugghiante slanciossi fosco ed ardito nell'alto mare il vascello.

The rural scandal, and the rural jest,

Fly harmless, to deceive the tedious time,
And steal unfelt the sultry hours away.
Behind the master walks, builds up the shocks;
And, conscious, glancing oft on every side
His sated eye, feels his heart heave with joy.
The gleaners spread arouud, and here and there,
Spike after spike, their scanty harvest pick.

Be not too narrow, husbandmen; but fling From the full sheaf, with charitable stealth, The liberal handful. Think, oh grateful think! How good the GOD of HARVEST is to you;
