DOMESTIC OCCURRENCES.

The Emperor Alexander has issued an ordinance prohibiting, under penalty of imprisonment or the knout, artizans and domestics, of both sexes, from gambling for money, in private houses, taverns, &c. Heads of families, inn-keepers, &c. permitting or conniving at the practice, are subjected to a penalty of 25 florins, for each offender. His Majesty has presented 130,000 rubles of silver to the distressed city of Welna.

A few days ago 26 bankers at work on the Dearne and Dove Canal, had a supper provided in commemoration of peace, at the Red Lion Inn, at Wosborough Bridge, near Barnsley, when they eat and drank as follows:-40lbs. of beef, 36lbs. of potatoes, 20lbs. of pudding, 18lbs. of bread, and a quantity of ale equal to 150lbs. weight, which amounted to 10lbs. each man!

A few day ago, a couple went to Heanor church, in Derbyshire, to be joined together in holy bands of matrimony at the altar, when the priest came to that part of the ceremony, when it expressly says, Wilt thou have this woman to thy wedded wife?" the rustic gravely replied, "Noa, I wonner." The priest, surprized at this reply, desired to know his reasons. Whoy," says he, "It wonner do to dey." Not satisfied with this, he expostu lated with him still further, on the impropriety of such conduct, and desired to be informed in positive terms of his motives for so doing? The swain answered, Whoy, I've chang'd my mind since I came into church, and I wonner ha her." From this determination no arguments whatever could remove him. On coming out of church the intended bride-maids set to, and gave the fickle swain so sound a drubbing, that it is thought the next time his courage leads him there again, the remembrance of aching bones will carry him through with the business.

In consequence of information given to the chief magistrate of Newcastle, a gang of young thieves, consisting chiefly of apprentice boys, (none above 16 years of age) were apprehended on yesterday se'nnight on several charges of felony. It appears that this hopeful gang kept a mistress in an apartment in Gateshead, fur, nished at their own expence, where she is supported very handsomely by subscription, and that they have regular meetings at certain public-houses, where they spend their ill-gotten treasure in a very genteel style!

In consequence of a wager of 5000 guineas each, made between Robert Barclay, Esq. of Ury, in the neighbourhood of Glasgow, and Captain Fletcher, well known on the turf, and owner of Allegranti, &c. the former of which gentlemen, undertook to walk 90 miles in 21 successive hours. Mr. Barclay commenced his match on Monday, Nov. 9, at twelve o'clock, and accomplished the dis tance by 22 minutes after eight o'clock on Tuesday evening, being one hour and eight minutes less than the limited time
