SAMUEL JOHNSON (1709–84) was a poet (London, and The Vanity of Human Wishes), editor (The Rambler), literary critic and personality.
G. WILSON KNIGHT was formerly Professor of English Literature at the University of Leeds and is the author of many books on Shakespeare, such as The Wheel of Fire and Principles of Shakespearean Production.
MURRAY KRIEGER is the Carpenter Professor of Literary Criticism at the University of Iowa.
MAYNARD MACK is Professor of English at Yale University and is the author of some excellent articles on Pope and the eighteenth century.
MARTIN PRICE is Professor of English at Yale University and is the author of Swift's Rhetorical Art and To the Palace of Wisdom: Studies in order and energy from Dryden to Blake. HUGO M. REICHARD teaches English at Purdue University, Indiana.
GEOFFREY TILLOTSON is Professor of English Literature at Birkbeck College in the University of London and is the author of On the Poetry of Pope and Pope and Human Nature. JOSEPH WARTON (1722-1800) was a (very unsuccessful) headmaster of Winchester and a literary critic.
AUBREY WILLIAMS, who teaches at the University of Florida, is
the author of Pope's 'Dunciad': A Study of its Meaning and joint editor of the first volume of the Twickenham Edition of Pope's poetry.
