NORTHERN DIVISION.

On January 16, 1862, a serious disaster occurred at the Hartley Colliery, Northumberland, by which 201 lives were lost. The sympathy of the public was aroused, and a sum of about £86,000 was raised for the sufferers. trustees, on finding that this sum would more than meet the requirements,

The

arranged to redistribute about £20,000 to the twelve mining inspection
districts in the Kingdom, so "that the same might be applied to the suffering
occasioned by colliery accidents in the way which may appear to them most
desirable; and that, whilst leaving the district committee to be guided by
circumstances in administering relief, the committee recommended the
desirability of encouraging, with the means at their disposal, the establishment
of permanent relief funds in their respective localities, and of aiding those
already in operation.' This sum of £20,000 was, by September of the year
1864, apportioned between the inspection districts. The amount allotted to
the Midland District, viz., £1,201 3s. 4d., had increased by 1882 to about
£3,000. Of this £300 was granted to the Clay Cross Fund and £200 to the
Baddesley Fund, the balance of £2,500 being handed over to form the
nucleus of the "Midland District Miners' Fatal Accident Relief Society."
The remaining funds still in existence which were based upon the surplus of
the Hartley Relief Fund are referred to below.

The Fund was finally wound up in 1908 when the ultimate surplus was divided
between the Aged Mine Workers' Homes Associations of Northumberland
and Durham.

Funds created from surplus of Hartley Fund which are still in existence.
