pen wide the door; And mortals who pass through it, Are mortal nev-er more.

[blocks in formation]

WHO are these arrayed in white,
Brighter than the noon-day sun?
Foremost of the sons of light,

Nearest the eternal throne?
These are they that bore the cross;
Nobly for their Master stood;
Sufferers in his righteous cause;
Followers of the dying God.

2 Out of great distress they came; Washed their robes, by faith below, In thy blood, O glorious Lamb!

Blood that washes white as snow; Therefore are they next the throne; Serve their Maker day and night; God resides among his own,

God doth in his saints delight.

130875 & 68. D. Heb. 2:14.

THERE is a land immortal,
The beautiful of lands;

MCKELLAR.

Beside its ancient portal

A silent sentry stands;

He only can undo it,

And open wide the door;
And mortals who pass through it,
Are mortal nevermore.

2 Though dark and drear the passage
That leadeth to the gate,
Yet grace comes with the message,
To souls that watch and wait;
And at the time appointed

A messenger comes down,
And leads the Lord's anointed
From cross to glory's crown.
3 Their sighs are lost in singing,

They're blesséd in their tears; Their journey heavenward winging, They leave on earth their fears: Death like an angel seemeth;

"We welcome thee," they cry; Their face with glory beameth'Tis life for them to die!

1 GREAT God of nations! now to thee
Our hymn of gratitude we raise;
With humble heart, and bending knee,
We offer thee our song of praise.

2 Thy name we bless, Almighty God!
For all the kindness thou hast shown,
To this fair land the Pilgrims trod,-
This land we fondly call our own.

3 Here, freedom spreads her banner wide, And casts her soft and hallowed ray;Here, thou our fathers' steps didst guide In safety, through their dangerous way. 4 We praise thee, that the gospel's light, Through all our land, its radiance sheds; Dispels the shades of error's night, And heavenly blessings round us spreads. 1310 Thanksgiving.

DODDRIDGE.

ETERNAL Source of every joy, Well may thy praise our lips employ, While in thy temple we appear, To hail thee, Sovereign of the year! 2 Wide as the wheels of nature roll, Thy hand supports and guides the whole, The sun is taught by thee to rise, And darkness when to vail the skies. 3 The flowery spring at thy command, Perfumes the air, adorns the land; The summer rays with vigor shine, To raise the corn, to cheer the vine.

4 Thy hand, in autumn, richly pours,
Through all our coasts, redundant stores:
And winters, softened by thy care,
No more the face of horror wear.

5 Seasons and months, and weeks, and days,
Demand successive songs of praise;
And be the grateful homage paid,
With morning light and evening shade.
6 Here in thy house let incense rise,
And circling Sabbaths bless our eyes,
Till to those lofty heights we soar,
Where days and years revolve no more.

OUR Helper, God! we bless thy name, Whose love forever is the same; The tokens of thy gracious care Open, and crown, and close the year. 2 Amid ten thousand snares we stand, Supported by thy guardian hand; And see, when we review our ways, Ten thousand monuments of praise.

3 Thus far thine arm has led us on; Thus far we make thy merey known; And while we tread this desert land, New mercies shall new songs demand.

4 Our grateful souls, on Jordan's shore, Shall raise one sacred pillar more; Then bear, in thy bright courts above, Inscriptions of immortal love.

1. O God, be-neath thy guiding hand, Our ex-iled fathers crossed the sea;

And when they trod the wintry strand, With prayer and psalm they worshiped thee.

WHILE o'er the deep thy servants sail, Send thou, O Lord, the prosperous gale; And on their hearts where'er they go, Oh, let thy heavenly breezes blow!

2 If on the morning's wings they fly, They will not pass beyond thine eye; The wanderer's prayer thou bend'st to hear,

And faith exults to know thee near.

3 When tempests rock the groaning bark,
Oh, hide them safe in Jesus' ark!
When in the tempting port they ride,
Oh, keep them safe at Jesus' side!

4 If life's wide ocean smile or roar,
Still guide them to the heavenly shore;
And grant their dust in Christ may sleep,
Abroad, at home, or in the deep.

WELFORD. 3 Oh, may each soul assembled here,
Be married, Lord, to thee!

LORD! while for all mankind we pray,
Of every clime and coast,
Oh, hear us for our native land,
The land we love the most.

2 Oh, guard our shore from every foe,
With peace our borders bless,
With prosperous times our cities crown,
Our fields with plenteousness.

3 Unite us in the sacred love

Of knowledge, truth, and thee:
And let our hills and valleys shout
The songs of liberty.

4 Here may religion, pure and mild,
Smile on our Sabbath hours;
And piety and virtue bless

The home of us and ours.

5 Lord of the nations, thus to thee
Our country we commend;
Be thou her refuge and her trust,
Her everlasting friend.

WE come, O Lord, before thy throne, And, with united plea,

We meet and pray for those who roam Far off upon the

sea.

2 Oh, may the Holy Spirit bow
The sailor's heart to thee,
Till tears of deep repentance flow,
Like rain-drops in the sea!

3 Then may a Saviour's dying love
Pour peace into his breast,
And waft him to the port above
Of everlasting rest.

OUR Father! through the coming year
We know not what shall be;

But we would leave without a fear
Its ordering all to thee.

2 It may be we shall toil in vain

For what the world holds fair; And all the good we thought to gain, Deceive and prove but care.

3 It may be it shall darkly blend

Our love with anxious fears,
And snatch away the valued friend,

The tried of many years.

4 It may be it shall bring us days
And nights of lingering pain;
And bid us take a farewell gaze
Of these loved haunts of men.

5 But calmly, Lord, on thee we rest;
No fears our trust shall move;
Thou knowest what for each is best,
And thou art Perfect Love.

3 Great God! on what a slender thread
Hang everlasting things!
The eternal state of all the dead
Upon life's feeble strings!

4 Infinite joy, or endless woe,
Attends on every breath;
And yet, how unconcerned we go
Upon the brink of death!

5 Waken, O Lord, our drowsy sense,
To walk this dangerous road!
And if our souls are hurried hence,
May they be found with God.

[blocks in formation]

AWAKE, ye saints! and raise your eyes,
And raise your voices high:
Awake, and praise that sovereign love,
That shows salvation nigh.

2 On all the wings of time it flies,
Each moment brings it near:
Then welcome each declining day,
Welcome each closing year.

3 Not many years their rounds shall run, Nor many mornings rise,

Ere all its glories stand revealed
To our admiring eyes.

4 Ye wheels of nature! speed your course; Ye mortal powers! decay;

Fast as ye bring the night of death,
Ye bring eternal day.
