PUBLIC WORSHIP.
3 O happy souls that pray Where God appoints to hear! O happy men that pay
Their constant service there! They praise thee still; And happy they
That love the way
To Zion's hill!
4 They go from strength to strength, Through this dark vale of tears, Till each arrives at length, Till each in heaven appears : O glorious seat, When God our King Shall thither bring Our willing feet!
5 The Lord his people loves; His hand no good withholds From those his heart approves, From pure and pious souls: Thrice happy he, O God of Hosts, Whose spirit trusts Alone in thee !
Going to Church. Ps. 122.
1 How did my heart rejoice to hear My friends devoutly say, In Zion let us all appear,
And keep the solemn day!'
2 I love her gates, I love the road;
The church, adorned with grace, Stands like a palace, built for God, To show his milder face.
3 Up to her courts, with joys unknown, The holy tribes repair;
The Son of David holds his throne, And sits in judgment there.
4 Peace be within this sacred place, And joy a constant guest : With holy gifts, and heavenly grace, Be her attendants blest.
5 My soul shall pray for Zion still, While life or breath remains ;
There my best friends, my kindred dwell, There God my Saviour reigns.
The Sacrifice of the Heart.
1 WHEN, as returns this solemn day, Man comes to meet his maker, God, What rites, what honors shall he pay ? How spread his sovereign's praise abroad? 2 From marble domes and gilded spires Shall curling clouds of incense rise? And gems, and gold, and garlands deck The costly pomp of sacrifice?
3 Vain, sinful man! creation's Lord Thy golden offerings well may spare: But give thy heart, and thou shalt find Here dwells a God who heareth prayer.
The Lord's Day; or, Delight in Ordinances.
1 WELCOME, sweet day of rest, That saw the Lord arise; Welcome to this reviving breast, And these rejoicing eyes!
CHARACTER OF CHRIST.
2 The King himself comes near, And feasts his saints to-day; Here we may sit, and see him here, And love, and praise, and pray.
3 One day amidst the place
Where my dear Lord hath been, Is sweeter than ten thousand days Of pleasurable sin.
4 My willing soul would stay In such a frame as this; And sit and sing herself away To everlasting bliss.
The spiritual coronation.
1 ALL-HAIL the power of Jesus' name! Let angels prostrate fall; Bring forth the royal diadem, And crown him Lord of all.
2 Ye chosen seed of Israel's race, A remnant weak and small! Hail him, who saves you by his grace, And crown him Lord of all. 3 Ye Gentile sinners, ne'er forget The wormwood and the gall; Go-spread your trophies at his feet, And crown him Lord of all.
4 Let every kindred, every tribe On this terrestrial ball, To him all majesty ascribe,
And crown him Lord of all.
5 O, that with yonder sacred throng, We at his feet may fall; We'll join the everlasting song, And crown him Lord of all.
Excellence of God's Word. Ps. 19.
1 BEHOLD the morning sun
Begins his glorious way !
His beams through all the nations run, And life and light convey.
2 But where the gospel comes, It spreads diviner light;
It calls dead sinners from their tombs, And gives the blind their sight.
3 How perfect is thy word!
And all thy judgments just! Forever sure thy promise, Lord, And men securely trust.
4 My gracious God, how plain- Are thy directions given! I never read in vain,
But find the path to heaven.
5 I hear thy word with love, And I would fain obey;
Send thy good Spirit from above, To guide me, lest I stray.
6 While with my heart and tongue I spread thy praise abroad, Accept the worship and the song, My Saviour and my God.
1 Now the shades of night are gone ; Now the morning light is come; Lord, may we be thine to-day, Drive the shades of sin away.
ATTRIBUTES OF GOD.
2 Fill our souls with heavenly light, Banish doubt, and clear our sight; In thy service, Lord, to-day, May we stand, and watch and pray. 3 Keep our haughty passions bound; Save us from our foes around; Going out and coming in, Keep us safe from every sin.
4 When our work of life is past, O receive us then at last ; Night and sin will be no more, When we reach the heavenly shore.
Wisdom of God in his Works. Ps. 111. 1 SONGS of immortal praise belong To my almighty God;
He has my heart, and he my tongue, To spread his name abroad.
2 How great the works his hand hath wrought! How glorious in our sight! Good men in every age have sought His wonders with delight.
3 How most exact is nature's frame ! How wise the Eternal Mind! His counsels never change the scheme That his first thoughts designed.
4 Nature and time, and earth and skies, Thy heavenly skill proclaim; What shall we do to make us wise, But learn to read thy name?
5 To fear thy power, to trust thy grace, Is our divinest skill;
And he 's the wisest of our race, That best obeys thy will.
