Desirous to make our remarks as complete an ex position as possible of the most recent researches into the metals employed in construction, we do tlkreader a service by placing before him the following allies of analyses of iron ores in use, for which we are indebtef?o an able paper by Mr Edward Riley, late of l celebrated Dowlais Iron Works, read before the Sociev of Engineers. After stating that the clay ironstone-k had, until recently, been almost exclusively used for manufacture of iron until the discovery of the black band ironstones, and that this latter ore was found in thick layers, three feet to four feet in thickness, while the clay ironstones only occurred in thin layers a few inches in thickness in the mine shale, this authority proceeds to say: Before the introduction of railways.
