In early life was a mfr. of brass articles at Bridgeport, in which he made many inventions in connection with manufacture of barbed wire; was originator of buffer platform and coupler, of which modified types are in general use on passenger cars; became connected with Bell Telephone Co. at early day; originated the first telephone switchboard, the hard drawn copper which has made long distance telephony possible, the telephone call bell, etc. Received Edward Longstreth medal from Franklin Inst. of Phila., 1898, for origination of process of 'producing hard drawn copper wire; still engaged in development of Am. telephone and telegraph systems.
