Washington correspondent of the New York "Tribune," 1865-6; founded the "Detroit Post," 1866; temporary chairman of the National Republican Convention of 1868; United States Senator from Missouri, 1869-75; one of the organizers of the Liberal party in 1872 and presided over the convention which nominated Horace Greeley for President; Secretary of the Interior during the administration of President Hayes, 1877-81; edited the New York "Evening Post," 1881-4. Was one of the leaders in the Independent movement in 1884 and supported Grover Cleveland for President.
