A N English-Saxon Homily ON THE BIRTH-DAY OF St. GREGORY: Anciently used in the English-Saxon Church, Giving an Account of the Converfion of the ENGLISH FROM PAGANISM to CHRISTIANITY. Tranflated into Modern English, with NOTES, &c. dated and antiquated, which few Men, none, I believe, of the other Sex have ventured to converse with, fince the time when it was the current Language; did not Your MAJESTY's most wife Judgment, and great Clemency, allow to it a favourable Audience, as the Language, in which Your Earlieft Royal, and Pious Progenitors, both laid the Foundation of thofe Laws, by which You fo happily Govern, and in which They received that Orthodox Faith, of which You are the undoubted Defender. And it is humbly prefumed, that it will be be no less agreable to Your MaJESTY, to confider, That the Introduction of the Chriftian Faith, into the Roman Empire, was Effected by the Ever Glorious Helena, and the Converfion of the English much promoted, by the Endeavours of the First English Chriftian Queen Berhta: than feasonable, to remind Your MAJESTY, of her being congratulated on that Occafion, by the fame Holy Bishop, whose Kindness to this Nation, is recommended to the Knowledge of Your People, in this small Treatife, under the Patronage of Your Royal Favour.
