I Lo, God is here! let us adore,

And humbly bow before his face; Let all within us feel his power,

Let all within us seek his grace.

2 Lo, God is here! him, day and night,
United choirs of angels sing;
To him, enthroned above all height,
Heaven's host their noblest praises
bring.

3 Being of beings! may our praise
Thy courts with grateful incense fill;
Still may we stand before thy face,
Still hear and do thy sovereign will.

Tr. from Gerhard Tersteegen, 1697

1 Great God, the followers of thy Son,
We bow before thy mercy-seat,
To worship thee, the holy one,

10 Tune, LOUVAN (See opposite page) I Come, blessed spirit, source of light, Whose power and grace are unconfined,

Dispel the gloomy shades of night,

The thicker darkness of the mind.

2 To mine illumined eyes display

The glorious truth thy word reveals; Cause me to run the heavenly way; The book unfold, unloose the seals.

And pour our wishes at thy feet.

O grant thy blessing here to-day!
O give thy people joy and peace!
The tokens of thy love display,

And favor that shall never cease.

We seek the truth which Jesus brought;
His path of light we long to tread;
Here be his holy doctrines taught,
And here their purest influence shed.
Rev. Henry Ware, Jr., 1794

3 Thine inward teachings make me know,
The mysteries of redeeming love,
The emptiness of things below,
The excellence of things above.

4 While through this dubious maze I stray,
Spread, like the sun, thy beams abroad
To show the dangers of the way,
And guide my feeble steps to God.
Rev. Benjamin Beddome, 1717

Tune, PAX DEI (See opposite page)

1 O thou whose power o'er moving worlds presides,
Whose voice created, and whose wisdom guides!
On darkling man in pure effulgence shine,
And cheer the clouded mind with light divine.
