NEW-YORK Hail, Albion, native country! See, how changed WEST. LONDON: PRINTED FOR J. HARRIS; LONGMAN AND CO.; J. WALKER; R. BALDWIN; ΤΟ JOHN ATKYNS WRIGHT, OF CROWSLEY PARK, IN THE COUNTY OF OXFORD, ESQUIRE, One of the Representatives in Parliament for the CITY OF OXFORD, THESE HISTORICAL AND TOPOGRAPHICAL DELINEATIONS IN OXFORDSHIRE, ARE INSCRIBED, AS A SMALL TRIBUTE OF RESPECT FOR HIS PUBLIC CONDUCT, AND PRIVATE VIRTUES, BY HIS OBEDIENT, AND VERY HUMBLE SERVANT, J. N. BREWER. Kennington, Surrey, PREFATORY REMARKS. I SUBMIT to the Public this attempt towards a Topographical Account of Oxfordshire, with the diffidence that may be supposed likely to arise from an endeavour to delineate a county rendered of prominent interest by a distinguished University; and a county which has not been favoured" with the labours of a regular historian. Without the appearance of any undue assumption, I trust I may be permitted to say that I have used some exertions, connected with industry of research, to render the Work not unsatisfactory. By repeated journeys of investigation; by public advertisement; and by the inspection of papers deposited in va rious libraries, I have endeavoured to obtain all desirable, original, information concerning the subjects which required notice. |
