PREFACE.

THE second volume of my Classical Series is, in regard to its internal arrangement, so different, in many essential points, from the first volume published two years ago, that a detailed statement of the principles by which I have been guided, and the object I have in view, may not be entirely superfluous.

Since classical antiquity, in its various departments, has, during more than half a century, been explored with the utmost extent and minuteness of research, and since the stores of ancient learning have, in this way, been enriched by an immense accession of facts scarcely guessed at before, it appears to be one of the highest duties of education to place the results of these scientific inquiries within the reach of youth,— and this not only occasionally, or in the fragmentary manner in which the attempt has already been made, but regularly, completely, with a full hand, and in every direction.
