Amendment made, in page 4, line 9, after the word "home," by inserting the words "of any miscarriages occurring in the home, and "-(Dr. Vernon Davies).

(b) as respects any urban or rural district, the medical officer of health of which is precluded either by the terms of his appointment as such medical officer or by the terms of any appointment which he may hold as medical officer of any other local or public authority from engaging in private practice, the council of the district;

(c) as respects any other area, the council of the county"-(Sir Douglas Newton).

Another Amendment made, in page 5, line 37, by leaving out all the words from the word "incurred " to the end of the sub-section, and by inserting the words "under this Act by the local supervising authority shall be defrayed

(a) in the case of the council of a county, as expenses for special county purposes charged upon that part of the county for which the council are the local supervising authority under this Act;

(b) in the case of the council of a county borough or of an urban or rural district, as part of the general expenses of the council in the execution of the Public Health Acts:

Provided that the council of a county may, if they think fit, charge the expenses of the council under this Act as general county expenses, subject to the condition that the county council shall pay to the council of any district which is a local supervising authority for the purposes of this Act the amount (to be determined in case of dispute by the Minister of Health) raised by the council of the county in that district in respect of expenses under this Act "-(Sir Douglas Newton).

Clause 9.

Amendments made, in page 6, line 13, after the word "reception," by inserting the word "of "-(Sir Kingsley Wood); and in page 7, line 6, at the end of the Clause, by adding the words:

(2) In relation to any premises used or intended to be used solely for the reception of and the provision of nursing for a class of patients in whose case the requisite nursing can be suitably and adequately provided by nurses of a class whose names are contained in some part of the register of nurses required to be kept under The Nurses Registration Act, 1919, other than the general part of that register, references in the definition of "qualified nurse contained in sub-section (1) of this section to the general part of

the register shall be construed as including references to that other part of the register "-(Major-General Sir Richard Luce).

Amendments made, in page 7, line 13, by leaving out the words "nursing home within the meaning of this Act," and by inserting the words "maternity home" — - (Sir Kingsley Wood),—instead thereof; and in page 7, line 20, by leaving out all the words from the word "shall" to the word "a in line 21, and by inserting the words "if the authority with which he is registered under the said repealed enactment is for the purposes of this Act the local supervising authority of the area in which the home is situate, be deemed for all the purposes of this Act to be as from the commencement of this Act"-(Mr. Looker),instead thereof.

Clause, as amended, agreed to.

New Clause (" Application to London ")-(Mr. Gerald Hurst)-brought up, and read the first and second time, and added to the Bill.
