1 I SAW One hanging on a tree, In agony and blood; Who fixed his languid eyes on me, As near the cross I stood. 2 Sure, never, till my latest breath, It seemed to charge me with his death, 3 Alas! I knew not what I did,— But now my tears are vain; 4 A second look he gave, that said, 5 Thus while his death my sin displays In all its blackest hue, Such is the mystery of grace, It seals my pardon too! 3 Then, why, O blesséd Jesus Christ, 4 Not with the hope of gaining aught, 5 Ev'n so I love thee, and will love, 318. 1 How condescending and how kind Our misery reached his heavenly mind, 2 He sunk beneath our heavy woes, 3 This was compassion, like a God, 4 Now, though he reigns exalted high, 1 Go to dark Gethsemane, 7s, 61. Ye that feel the tempter's power; Watch with him one bitter hour; View the Lord of life arraigned; Oh, the pangs his soul sustained! God's own sacrifice complete : 4 Early hasten to the tomb, Where they laid his breathless clay; All is solitude and gloom, Who hath taken him away ? Christ is risen ;-he meets our eyes; Saviour, teach us so to rise! 1 He knelt: the Saviour knelt and prayed, 2 The sun set in a fearful hour, The skies might well grow dim, When this mortality had power So to o'ershadow him! That he who gave man's breath, might know The very depths of human woe. 3 He knew them all; the doubt, the strife, The faint, perplexing dread, The mists that hang o'er parting life, All darkened round his head; And the Deliverer knelt to pray ;Yet passed it not, that cup, away. 4 It passed not, though the stormy wave Had sunk beneath his tread; It passed not, tho' to him the grave Had yielded up its dead: 1 BEHOLD the Man! How glorious he! 2 Behold the Man! by all condemned, and his claims contemned, A man of sufferings and of woes. 3 Behold the Man! he stands alone; His foes are ready to devour; Not one of all his friends will own Their Master in this trying hour. 4 Behold the Man! So weak he seems, His awful word inspires no fear; But soon must he who now blasphemes Before his judgment seat appear. Behold the Man! Though scorned below He bears the greatest name above; The angels at his footstool bow, And all his royal claims approve. 8s 7s & 4s. 5 322.
