TABLE D.-CRIMES, 1899 to 1923.-Crimes (Indictable Offences) known to the Police 27 TABLE E.—SUMMARY OF THE PRECEDING TABLES, with the Proportions to Population 30 NOTES TO THE COMPARATIVE TABLES. These Tables have been compiled from the annual Tables in the previous volumes of Judicial Statistics from 1899 to 1922, and from the Tables for 1923 in the present volume. The figures are taken from the following Tables :— Table A, Persons tried at Assizes and Quarter Sessions, from Table III, column 2. Table B, Persons tried for indictable offences by Courts of Summary Jurisdiction, from Section A of Table VIII, column 2, as expanded in Table XVI, columns 7, 8, and 9. Table AB, All persons tried for indictable offences, obtained by adding the figures of Tables A and B. Table C, Persons tried for non-indictable offences by Courts of Summary Jurisdiction, from Section B of Table VIII, column 2. Table D, Crimes known to the Police, from Table XVI, column 2. In each Table the headings for offences for which there were no figures are omitted. Table E shows the average figures, both actual and in proportion to population, (a) of prosecutions for all crimes and offences for each quinquennium since 1899, and (b) of the crimes (indictable offences) known to the police during the same periods. The non-indictable offences are in this Table grouped in two divisions—those that are definitely criminal in character, and those which may be regarded as "non-criminal." The division of non-indictable offences into " criminal and "non-criminal" is discussed at page 22 of the Criminal Statistics for 1898. " In Table E the proportions are calculated on the population for the middle year of each period of years, e.g., those for 1919 to 1923 on the estimated population for 1921, those for 1914 to 1918 on the estimated population for 1916.
