SUBCOMMITTEE ON EDUCATION, Washington, D.O. The subcommittee met, pursuant to notice, at 9:30 a.m., in room 4232, New Senate Office Building, Senator Wayne Morse (chairman) presiding.

Present: Senators Morse (presiding), Clark, Yarborough, and Case. Also present: Senator Benjamin Smith, of Massachusetts, a member of the committee.

BILL To amend the National Defense Education Act of 1958 in order to authorize for teachers in private nonprofit schools certain benefits under the provisions of titles II, V, and VI of such Act provided for teachers in public schools

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States * America in Congress assembled, That sections 205 (b) (3), 511, and 611 of the ational Defense Education Act of 1958 are amended by inserting before the ord "public" the following: "private nonprofit or".

BILL To amend the National Defense Education Act of 1958 in order to authorize the granting of national defense scholarships

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States America in Congress assembled, That the National Defense Education Act of 58 is amended by inserting after title I a new title as follows:

"TITLE I A-NATIONAL DEFENSE SCHOLARSHIPS

"APPROPRIATIONS AUTHORIZED

'SEC. 111. There is hereby authorized to be appropriated for the fiscal year ling June 30, 1962, and for each of the five succeeding fiscal years the sum $25,000,000 for scholarships to persons who have not previously been awarded olarships under this title and who are selected for award of such scholarships the State commissions established in accordance with section 116 of this title. addition there are authorized to be appropriated for the fiscal year ending e 30, 1963, and for each of the eight succeeding fiscal years such sums as are
