Waterloo. At the suggestion of the Duke of Wellington, silver medals were awarded to every officer and soldier who was present in the field during the 16th, 17th, and 18th days of June, 1815.

In the London Gazette of the 23rd April, 1816, the following notification appeared :

"MEMORANDUM.

"Horse Guards, March 10, 1816. "The Prince Regent has been graciously pleased, in the name and on the behalf of His Majesty, to command that, in commemo"ration of the brilliant and decisive victory of Waterloo, a medal "shall be conferred upon every officer, non-commissioned officer "and soldier, present upon that memorable occasion.

"His Royal Highness has further been pleased to command, "that the ribband issued with the medal shall never be worn but "with the medal suspended to it.

"By command of His Royal Highness, the Prince Regent, "FREDERICK,

"Commander-in-Chief."

Rev. Victory seated, holding in her right hand a palm branch, in her left a sprig of olive. WATERLOO below; WELLINGTON above. Exergue-JUNE 18, 1815.

Ribbon. Crimson, blue edges.

Medals are met with having silver or steel bars. Originally a large steel split ring was attached. Name, rank, and regiment indented or punched.

Rarity. Scarce.

The medals of some regiments are rarer than others. For example:-2nd N. British Dragoons (Scots Greys), the 6th Inniskillings, 28th Regiment, 42nd Highlanders, &c.

The King's German Legion, or German troops employed at Waterloo, received the above medal.

Waterloo. Brunswick contingent. The Prince Regent also ordered bronze medals, manufactured from captured French guns, to be distributed to the soldiers of Brunswick, who survived the actions of the 16th, 17th, and 18th of June.

P. 11.-N. AMERICA. Indian Chief's Medal. A large silver decoration, given by George III, previous to 1801.

Obv. Young bust of George III—GEORGIUS III DEI GRATIA.
Rev. Arms of Great Britain, with the Fleur-de-Lis.

Number 3 was given from 1801 to 1814; also a smaller size-same obv. and rev.

P. 13.-ARMY OF INDIA. The spelling is in accordance with the General Order.

P. 15.-ASSEERGHUR on the clasp attached to this medal.

P. 16.-BALTIC. Two officers and about ninety men of the Sappers and Miners, who served on board the flag ship, received this medal with their names indented on the edge.

P. 50.-JOWAKI. Expedition against the Jowaki tribe and Afreedes, north-west frontier of the Punjab, December, 1877. The troops employed were, the 51st Regiment, King's Own; 9th Regiment; Rifle Brigade, 4th batt", two companies; 20th, 22nd, and 27th Punjab Native Infantry; 14th Sikhs, 17th Bengal Cavalry, a battery of Heavy Artillery, a battery of Horse Artillery, and Royal Engineers, two companies.
