The Linguistic Society of America was founded in December, 1924, for the advancement of the scientific study of language. The Society plans to promote this aim by bringing students of language together in its meetings, and by publishing the fruits of research. It has established a quarterly journal, a series of language monographs, and a series of language dissertations; the last two will appear at irregular intervals, according to the material offered to the Committee on Publications and the funds available for the purpose. Members will receive all in return for the annual dues of Five Dollars.

Membership in the Society is not restricted to professed scholars in linguistics. All persons, whether men or women, who are in sympathy with the objects of the Society, are invited to give it their assistance in furthering its work. Application for membership should be made to the Secretary, Professor Roland G. Kent, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pa.

Entered as Second Class Matter at the Postoffice at Baltimore, Maryland. This Journal is published quarterly by the Linguistic Society of America. Members of the Society receive it without extra charge, three dollars of the annual dues being appropriated for this purpose; to others, its price is five dollars per annum. Subscriptions and other business communications should be addressed to Language, or to Roland G. Kent, Treasurer, L. S. A., University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pa. Members were invited to visit the collections of the Field Museum of Natural History, Roosevelt Road and Lake Michigan; of the Art Institute of Chicago, Michigan Avenue and Adams Street; of the Museum of the Oriental Institute, University of Chicago; and of the Newberry Library, 60 West Walton Place. They were also invited to attend a special demonstration at the Adler Planetarium, at 5.00 P.M. on Tuesday, December 29.

The First Session of the Linguistic Society was held on the morning of Monday, December 28, in Parlor M, Floor A of the Hotel Morrison. President Flom called the meeting to order at 9.20 A.M. About 65 persons were present at the session. The business of the Society occupied the first part of the session.

By motion, the reading of the minutes of the last meeting was dispensed with, as they had already been printed in Bulletin No. 9 of the Society, pages 3-20, which was distributed in February, 1936.

The Secretary, Prof. R. G. Kent, presented the following report, which was ordered to be received and filed:

For the year 1936 the membership statistics are as follows: For the year 1935 there were 445 members (apart from Honorary Members), of whom 8 died during the year (L. Allen, E. B. Babcock, H. Collitz, H. J. Heck, J. P. Hoskins, T. A. Jenkins, M. Parry, W. P. Woodman); 16 presented their resignations, effective at the end of 1935 (W. T. Eickmann, W. J. Grinstead, M. E. Jones, J. M. Kelso, R. Knowles, Mrs. F. B. Krauss, C. G. Lowe, M. Metlen, O. M. Norlie, Mrs. H. P. Pond, A. F. J. Remy, M. Sprengling, G. K. Strodach, S. N. Wolfenden, D. L. Wolfle, A. J. F. Zieglschmid); 1 presented his resignation, effective at the end of 1934 (A. P. Martin); 9 were dropped for non-payment of dues during 1934 and 1935. The net membership with which the Society started 1936 was, therefore, 411; the new members for 1936 are 59, including 3 who had previously been members (R. Brandstätter, C. L. Meader, A. A. Micocci), of whom one resumed his original classification by purchasing the intervening volumes of the publications at the regular rate. The total membership for 1936, in addition to the Honorary Members, is 470, a gain of 25 over 1935. Of the 470, 13 are unpaid for 1935–6 and are subject to being dropped at this time, and 37 others are unpaid for 1936. We regretfully record the death of four Active Members in 1936: W. F. Badè, S. E. Bassett, M. Callaway Jr., C. Knapp.

Since the last report, two new Life Members have been received: E. Adelaide Hahn, at the end of 1935, and Edgar H. Sturtevant, in 1936. Their Life Membership fees have been added to the principal of the Endowment Fund.

For 1935 there were 24 Honorary Members on the rolls, of whom 2 (K. Luick, E. N. Setälä) died during the year. The Society elected 2 (J. Endzelin, D. Jones),

making a total of 24 for 1936; but of these we must regretfully chronicle the loss of Hermann Hirt, who died at the beginning of October, of Antoine Meillet, who died on September 22, and of Wilhelm Meyer-Lübke, who died on October 3. The library subscriptions have increased from 146 to 152, by the loss of 7 and the addition of 13. Of the 152, there are 63 foreign subscriptions.

The exchanges and copies for review have increased from 76 to 81.

The number of foreign scholars receiving the regular publications of the Society gratuitously is now 113.

We can again record, and even more decisively than one year ago, that the membership of the Society is increasing. But we must again all feel a personal responsibility in the matter, and seek to win our associates and our students to the cause of linguistic studies. All members are asked to regard this as a personal appeal.

It is also gratifying to observe that the revenues of the Society have increased in 1936, and that the net working reserve of current funds is larger than it was one year ago. The main causes for this seem to be the increase in membership and subscriptions, the large sale of back publications, and a reduction in certain lines of expenditure.

As Treasurer, Prof. Kent presented the following report:
