The American bison, commonly called the buffalo, was very numerous at one time on the western prairies. In the early part of the nineteenth century, it was still found in Ohio. It is thought that about three hundred thousand Indians lived almost entirely upon its flesh. In hunting the buffalo, the Indians employed the spear and bow and arrow as well as the firearm.
