SUMMARY for Scotland of the number of Formal and of Test Samples analysed on behalf of Local Authorities, and the number and percentage of Cases reported against for the Year ended 30th September, 1926. (a) Milk.-The 5,379 formal samples included 5,143 samples of new milk (366 adulterated and 8" of doubtful purity"); 81 samples of skim milk (2 adulterated); 42 samples of cream (3 adulterated); 36 samples of condensed milk (1 adulterated); 10 samples of full cream condensed milk (1 adulterated); 3 samples of buttermilk (1 adulterated); 19 samples of certified milk; 20 samples of Grade "A milk; and also 4 samples of double cream: 1 sample of preserved double cream; 4 samples of condensed skim milk; 1 sample of evaporated milk; 8 samples of pasteurised milk; and 7 samples of Grade "A" tuberculin tested milk, all of which were found to be genuine. (b) Spirits.-The 263 formal samples were made up of:- whisky, 210 (24 adulterated); rum, 44 (2 adulterated); gin, 7 (1 adulterated); and 2 samples of brandy which were found genuine. (c) Drugs.—The drugs éxamined included the following:-cream of tartar, 89 (3 adulterated); camphorated oil, 16 (3 adulterated); medicine, 6 (6 adulterated); tincture of iodine, 4 (2 adul. terated); and purified borax, 4 (1 adulterated). (d) Other Articles.-The other articles examined included the following:-lard, 70 (3 adulterated); dripping, 43 (1 adulterated); vinegar, 29 (2 adulterated); ice cream, 28 (2 adulterated); ground cinnamon, 27 (3 adulterated); ground ginger, 20 (1 adulterated); preserved peas, 15 (2 adulterated); sausages, 18 (2 adulterated); ham, 10 (5 adulterated); custard, 10 (5 adulterated): ground almonds, 5 (1 adulterated); apples, 3 (2 containing 0.0018 and 0.0023 grains of arsenic per lb. respectively); and tomato paste, 1 (adulterated). (e) This is the number of samples reported as being more than 35 degrees U.P. Legally, no offence appears to be committed by any extent of dilution if sufficient statutory notice of dilution is given to the individual purchaser.
