THE

PREFACE.

It has been represented to me by schoolmasters, that no book of Greek Exercises exists which is arranged on the same plan, or can be conveniently used as an accompaniment to my Greek Delectus. I feel it to be necessary to supply this want; as I am convinced that the Greek Grammar cannot be thoroughly learned without constant practice in translation, not only from Greek into English, but also from English into Greek.

The book, it should be observed, is intended for beginners in Greek; and does not profess to do more than lay the foundations of a knowledge of that language. There is no attempt in it to teach elegance of style or peculiarity of idiom, or the philosophy of grammar. I hold that a great mistake is made by those who introduce these subjects into the first instructions given by them into the rudiments of grammar.
